ipod reviews - 01/11/2001 18:46

ok I keep reading about the new ipod and every article raves about the 32 mb ram that allows the hdd to stay spun down.

I don't remember ever reading about the empeg doing that when it was reviewed why is it important now.

how come when apple uses an already existing idea they get praised for it ? I'm not even reading this on mac sites the webpages I am looking at are like zdnet.

Isn't it important on the ipod because it's a portable, battery operated device?

Personally, I'm holding out for the Rio Drive.

Apple push this as a feature as they have a bigger cache than anyone else at the moment.

There is a "sweet spot" for cache size vs drive spinups - at some point, the power the DRAM takes is more than spinning the drive up. I suspect they've done their homework and picked 32MB :)

I just hate the fact that apple uses technology from other devices and no one cares if compaq made the same device everyone would be complaining about the stealing ideas instead of praising their innovation
