Blatant ploy for sympathy - 02/11/2001 13:30

For the last several days, I've been cleaning up a Nimda infection on our local network. Just thought you'd like to know.

Not having to deal with that is probably the only advantage to me being out of work. Then again, I admin operating systems that don't suck. Or I do when I'm employed.

How big? Do the ships you sail on use internal combustion engines, like big diesels, or are they steam turbines, or ??

I'd love to hear more!

Re: Blatant ploy for sympathy - 03/11/2001 02:37

last ship was a 7 cylinder in line 2 stroke diesel with a bore of 840mm and a stroke of about 2600mm producing 28,000Bhp at 64rpm. weighing about 600tons
Two turbo chargers at about five foot across giving a boost pressure of 1.80bar
The fuel we use is residule fuel oil which when at room temperature has a viscosity somewhere between road tar and treacle as it one of the waste products from refining crude one of the elements that is slightly lighter than road tar we have to heat it to 120celcius before we can burn it.
We use uniflow scavenging which means one exhaust valve at the top (hydraically opened and air springs to close) and inlet ports at the bottom

But the real impressive bit is an efficency rating of about over 54% which is incredably considering the average car engine is about 10 to 15% at very best. but we still burn 80 tons a day of fuel.

If you want some more stupid figure i shall post them

Hm, it develops some 20-30 times less power per litre (<3 bhp/l vs. 50-100) than car engines. Is that the key to efficiency?

Hi Bonzi.

The problem is that the heavy oil that machine uses has a lot less energy/litre than "normal" fuel for cars.
