Missing Hard Drives

Missing Hard Drives - 27/11/2001 12:35

After I upgraded to XP, I have two hard drives completely missing and undetected. The two hard drives are older guys hanging off of a Promise Ultra33 PCI board. The Hcl says it is compatible, the Promise guys say it is compatible. When the system was running Me there was no issue. When the system boots up there is a screen just after the bios sets up that shows the Promise board initializing. In Windows XP it's as if the hardware and hard drives don't even exist. Any ideas? No amount of mucking or scanning for hardware makes them appear.

Has the controller been identified as an Unknow device?
Remove it and let it redetect, providing the driver.

Hi,

Is it listed in the device manager?

Is it marked with an exclamation point. That indicates an error.

Try to remove it from the device manager, then scan for hardware changes. It should pop-up.

Move it to another PCI slot, Windows XP is ACPI capable, which your 98 wasn't. Sometimes that mucks around with IRQs and moving the card can help.

I gather that you have used up all the on-board IDE ports?

There is no devices with yellow question marks or red crosses.

I had Millenium before, and I thought Me was ACPI capable -- but what does it have to do with the "missing" card?

I'm going to try moving the board tonight. I have a couple of open slots. (and yep, I've used up all the motherboard IDE buses).
