Napster at 60 MPH

Napster at 60 MPH - 24/01/2002 10:43

I know this was brought up before, but the fall of Ricochet made it highly unlikely. Well, Verizon is rolling out 144Kbps wireless as soon as next week (Wired Article Here).

The proposal:
A Napster clone (WinMX, Kazaa, etc.) ported to the Empeg for the purpose of downloading new music while driving. 144Kbps is probably enough bandwidth to stream, but slow clients on the other end, wireless connection signal issues, and Empeg's serial connection speed would cause problems.

It seems like this can be done. I'm just renewing interest since high speed wireless is back and we have many more owners contributing now.

Woohoo! I hope when they say Philadelphia they mean "Philadelphia and its suburbs." I'm about 10 miles west and this 144kbps services sounds pretty friggin' dope.

The problem I forsee is that they're saying phones aren't even available for the service yet... Even if they were, I don't imagine the phones would have any way to pass the data on to a device like the Empeg.. Can't remember the last time I saw a DB-9 serial port on a cell phone...

Interesting thinking though.

Serial cables for many phones are available here. Bluetooth is supposed to become more available in cell phones, so there is always that option.

Aaaaaahhh... I see....

(I'm a cell phone neophyte.. Just have a regular ol' Nokia 8260 that doesn't do any real Internet stuff except for short emails.)

He thanks for the Link, I have found a desktop handfree and a data cable for my Nokia 6110.

I could try Gnokki and maybe install it on the Empeg ....

Just so everyone is aware, http://www.cellphoneshop.net ships out of Hong Kong via postal mail. This is not a bad thing. I have made 3 purchases from them in the past, so I can vouch for their legitimacy.
