Winamp Loading Problem

Winamp Loading Problem - 12/02/2002 13:42

I'm having some difficulty with Winamp.

Say I have Winamp open and I want to load a whole album to listen to it.

I double click on the "ADD" button in the playlist window. I go to the album directory where the songs are located. I select all the songs and press enter. Winamp then loads the songs but they're not in order! It's so annoying! All my files are either named "Artist - Album - Track# - Song" or without the Album part. I also have "sort files on load" checked in Winamp options.

The only way to get them to load in order is to drag them onto the playlist window.

What's going on?

Have you instead tried right-clicking on the folder in Explorer and selecting "play in Winamp"?

That always works for me (assuming shuffle is off in Winamp).

Oh, one other thing.

When you select files in Explorer or in a "file-open" dialog box, the selection order isn't what you think it is. Maybe that's the problem: Maybe WinAmp is taking the file selection order rather than the filename order. Please see this post for details of the funky Windows Explorer selection order issues.

Hmm, no, that doesn't seem to affect it. When I open a group of tracks from the Open dialog in WinAmp, they play in album order just fine. No matter how I select them. Odd that you're having trouble with it, it seems to work great for me every time.

You don't just have Shuffle turned on, do you?

MusicMatch always does this to me... it is worse if the tracks were recorded out of order.. as if it sorts them by creation date.

All versions of winamp have done this to me on, well, all versions of windows.

I have to agree, I think it has to do with the creation date. I had a cd I ripped once and the first songs failed. After reripping now the first songs always appear below the ones I ripped first..

Oh well. Anyway I select the songs, they are always the same order.

The only way to get them to load in order is to drag them onto the playlist window.

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious . . . .
Once you've loaded the playlist using the "ADD Dir" button;
"MISC" Button
"Sort List"
"Sort List by File Name"
Just a bit quicker if the songs load out of whack.

That's all well and good, but why should I have to go through that? Why can't Winamp ALWAYS sort by filename on load. It doesn't make any sense at all why it shouldn't.

I'm also not sure that it's loading by creation date. The majority of my MP3s in most album were all ripped one after the other. My load problem is that it seems to randomize it or sort it in explorer order. It doesn't make any sense at all to me why it would do that, even with "Sort Files on Load" checked. It seems to me that checking that doesn't do anything. Unchecked, the songs load randomly. Checked, they still load randomly. ARRGH.

Mine does not behave the way you're describing. Perhaps you're using a version of WinAmp which has a bug in this area?

Or perhaps you're using some kind of a plug-in that does something strange to it, have you checked your plug-ins?

Are you sure it's just not a case of "shuffle" being turned on?
