What is Glysium?

What is Glysium? - 20/05/2002 07:33

I don't know if I spelled it right and a google search didn't come up with an answer. There has been a radio ad on this morning advertising some product called Glysium (pronounced gli-see-um) that promises a euphoric feeling without any hangover effect. Sounds like some sort of antidepressant? WTF?
I don't think it's something I would take but it sounds like an illicit drug being advertised on the radio, how can they do that?

Glucinum \Glu*ci"num\, n. [Cf. F. glucinium, glycium, fr. Gr. ?, sweet. Cf. Glycerin.] (Chem.) A rare metallic element, of a silver white color, and low specific gravity (2.1), resembling magnesium. It never occurs naturally in the free state, but is always combined, usually with silica or alumina, or both; as in the minerals phenacite, chrysoberyl, beryl or emerald, euclase, and danalite. It was named from its oxide glucina, which was known long before the element was isolated. Symbol Gl. Atomic weight 9.1. Called also beryllium. [Formerly written also glucinium.]

Thank you very much, Miss Lippi. Thank you for the introduction to the Webster's Dictionary.
Now does anyone actually know something about this product?

You really don't want to be ingesting Beryllium. It's a very toxic metallic element. It must be something that sounds similar to it's old name of Glycium. See if you can get more details next time you hear the advert.

You asked, I answered with what I could find. Maybe you could put some more effort into it and search with the correct spelling that I found for you... you're welcome, BTW.
I'd imagine it's probably something like the hangover cures you find in the Qwik-E Marts. An "herbal" mixture with higher doses of magnesium to give you a semi-euphoric feeling, assuming that is what high doses of magnesium will do to a human. Kinda like the extra B12 shot in the energy drinks on the market.

You know, I was just thinking about this... Maybe they really are talking about Beryllium.

AFAIK, most "mind altering" or "mood enhancing" substances are extremely toxic, but if taken in small enough doses, won't actually kill you. Take Nicotine for example. It's one of the most toxic substances known to man. Just so happens that smokers don't actually get enough to kill them (at least not instantly...), so they get some kind of "mood enhancing" feeling instead. I'm not a smoker, so I'm really not sure what that feeling is, but they obviously get something out of it, or they probably wouldn't keep smoking.

Anyway, my point is, maybe Beryllium is similar in this regards. Maybe if takin in small enough doses, it won't actually kill you, but will actually make you feel some sort of euphoria or something. Not something I would try, but hey, it certainly won't stop everybody.

Before we get of onto another smoking debate thread, let me just say that Caffeine falls into this category, too: it can also stop a grown man's heart if taken in sufficient quantity.

...and all of the members of the alcohol family too.

Let's keep this discussion vice-agnostic.

Re: What is Glysium? - 20/05/2002 12:33

Yup. Caffeine is another one.

FYI, I wasn't even trying to start an "Anti Smoking" debate or anything like that. Nicotine just happened to be the first chemical that came to mind and fit the parameters. Sorry if I made it sound otherwise...

I found this link on Google:

So, it looks like it's spelled "Glycium".

Your assuming that this person has spelled it correctly.

No one has ever died of a marijuana overdose though. Though I do imagine that a large quantity of pure THC would kill someone. Im not condoning pot but its alot less dangerous than smoking or drinking.

What about sugar?

Too much of anything in one dose will kill you pretty effectively.

Is the euphoric effect caused by popping brain cells usually?

It is my understanding that the chemicals in marijuana are even more conducive to causing lung cancer than tobacco. That is, if a person smoked 40 joints a day, he would be more likely to get lung cancer than someone who smoked two packs of cigarettes a day.

I suspect very few people smoke 40 joints a day, however, so overall marijuana kills far fewer people than tobacco.

Re: What is Glysium? - 20/05/2002 19:26

True but then again at least pot is 100% natural tobacco has all kinds of additives. So they may have been comparing the two without taking in affect the extra chemicals in tobacco. The average pot smoker probably only smokes 4 or 5 joints a week and the average casual user much less. So overall I think it is safer and well I see that you didnt argue the case against drinking so I assume we agree there. Its all about moderation and you really cant do that with cigarettes

>It is my understanding that the chemicals in marijuana are even more conducive to causing lung cancer than tobacco.

I did a research paper on it back in high school. One study found that, ounce for ounce, pot had 3 times as many carcinogens, and 5 times as much tar as tobacco. I forget exactly what the relative frequency of smoking vs pot use was for the average user, but it was something like 2 joints vs almost a pack a day of cigs.

It sounds like you haven't lost any friends to drug overdoses. I hope you never do. I've heard the "its natural" argument before. You don't know whats been mixed in before you got it(no quality control). Some people unfortunately cannot moderate in which case alcohol is just as bad as anything else.

Grow your own stuff, and no I havent had any direct friends die of drug overdoses, but then again you havent heard of someone dying from a pot overdose and very few of my friends engage in illegal substances other than pot. Pot is the only illegal drug I somewhat dont see as bad.

Re: What is Glysium? - 20/05/2002 23:13

And you can also grow your own tobacco. People don't die from tobacco overdoses either. They die from a tumor in their lungs, just like marijuana smokers would too if they smoked as much as tobacco smokers. The basic differences between the two is that one gets you high and makes you retarded and anitsocial while the other gets you 'kinda high' and is addictive.

On a different note, I was a glycium addict for over 4 years. I would smoke it in a pipe and then enhance it by snorting powdered beryllium. Good stuff. But I'm clean now, I've been straight for at least 6 hours.

This thread reminds me of 1000 monkeys typing, eventually something intelligible comes out. Except here all I get is irresponsible speculation. Sorry I asked.

Sugar is pretty toxic to the human body. Unregulated, large amounts of sugar will cause blindness, destroy nerve endings, and cause all sorts of organ failure. Ask any diabetic.

Re: What is Glysium? - 21/05/2002 16:43

In the case of OD it's almost always a case of what has NOT been mixed in before you got it. "Bad" batches of any given narcotic are usually in fact particularly pure batches, which haven't been cut in the way you're used to. The result can be fatal, and in most cases you would never know what hit you.

This isn't an unusual problem for smack heads - but I've certainly never heard of anyone OD'ing on a dirty great reefer!
