Internet Monitoring - 10/06/2002 10:22

I was on Yahoo the other day and a pop up came up advertising Internet Washer Pro. I guess it is supposed to be able to eliminate all bits of info so that your company can not see what you've been doing on the internet. Is this possible? If so are there any other software programs that can do this for less than the $79.99 that it costs to download Internet Washer Pro?

I doubt it. Where I work, the server simply logs all websites requested. The client computers don't have permission to modify anything on the server, even if an Administrator is logged in on them. I would think that is good practice and would be implemented in most business networks.

He's right. You could clean your computer all you want, but that info is stored in logs that you can't get access to.

...so that your company can not see what you've been doing on the internet...

I use "Window Washer" for cleaning up the histories and logs on my local PC. Sounds like a similar program. Except that Window Washer is meant to clean logs from everything, and is extensible (with customization files), it doesn't just clean out the Internet Explorer browsing history.

This only covers your local PC, though. Clearing your local PC logs is only useful if your company tends to like poke around your local PC for information.

Most companies that want to track your internet surfing habits would do so through your proxy server (firewall) logs, which you probably don't have access to. If you really don't want your company "seeing what you've been doing on the internet", then you need to be able to clear both: Your PC's local history logs, as well as the logs on the proxy server.

ssh -> linux box at home -> lynx is always my way of doing it ... even though I'M the Network Administrator here lol.

Works for me too...You can also port forward X11 over your ssh connection, and run a browser on you home box, forwarding the display to your work box, although this can be a tad on the slow side..

Heck.. why not just run the browser on the AT-WORK machine, forwarding all HTTP over SSH to the home machine, and then out.

Much more sensible! That's how I do it.

Cheers

Just another "day at the office" for those of us running Linux..

Re: Internet Monitoring - 11/06/2002 07:18

Actually, up until I got my new laptop (HP which doesn't like linux ) I had an old 100mhz laptop running linux on it. I'd lug it to work every day and stick it on my network. Just about everything I did that wasn't work related (80% of my work day) I ran from the laptop via ssh forwarding over to my px running win2k and an X server.

Now i'm torn because i've gotten used to XP running on my new laptop but when either Redhat or Mandrake come out with a new version supporting kernel 2.6, it'll have the drivers I need to get linux working on it. I'm debating a dual boot, but not sure. We'll see when the time comes.

Yeah, I really should get around to configuring a proxy on my home machine...But for most of the stuff I want, lynx works..
