"You went over my helmet?"

"Not exactly over sir, more to the side...I'll always call you first, it'll never happen again!"

"Prepare ship for light speed!"

"No No No, light speed is too slow."

"Light speed too slow?"

"Yes, we're going to have to go right to...Ludicrous speed"

*Gasp* "Sir, we've never gone that fast before, I don't know if the ship can take it"

"What's the matter Col. Sanders...Chicken?"

"What the hell am I looking at?"
"Now. You're looking at now, sir. Everything that happens now, is happening now."
"What happened to then?"
"We passed then."
"When?"
"Just now. We're at now, now."
"Go back to then."
"When?"
"Now."
"Now?"
"Now."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"We missed it."
"When?"
"Just now."
"When will then...be now?"

"...Soon."

I personally think Mel's movies started going downhill rather rapidly after Young Frankenstein. Blazing Saddles was borderline. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but to me, Mel's movies always sound funnier when you're QUOTING them than when you're WATCHING them. I'm not sure why.

Hence, I didn't realize you were quoting Spaceballs until about four posts into it, as I haven't even sat through that entire movie yet.

I completely disagree. I think Blazing Saddles is a GREAT movie. Personally, I think everything went downhill after Spaceballs. After that came Life Stinks, Robin Hood: Men In Tights and Dracula: Dead and Loving It.

And come on, History of the World, Part 1 came after Blazing Saddles. That's another classic.

I've been patiently waiting for a Mel Brooks DVD collection. How could they not make one! That and a Tim Burton collection.

Yeah, they kinda did start a downhill trend. I think they've all been funny, but some are a little dumber than the others.

I do agree about the quoting though. You gotta admit, his movies make great quotes.

And of course, Dave Chappelle is great in everything.

History of the World is a perfect example of what I mean. I stared at the movie without laughing, thinking it was just plain dumb. It was like they were trying too hard or something, I don't know. But then, after seeing it, quoting the lines from movie, the individual jokes are funny when you re-tell them.

I think it's the line between writing something funny, and producing something funny. I think his stuff looks fantastic on paper, but something goes wrong in the process of translating the jokes to the silver screen. I think casting might be part of it. Gene's work in Frankenstein and Saddles is brilliant, but later films started featuring Mel in bigger roles, and didn't have Gene. Sorry, Mel just isn't a funny actor. He's a brilliant writer, but I just don't laugh when I see him perform even his best material.
