Time Warner Cable cracking down on Wi-Fi

Time Warner Cable cracking down on Wi-Fi - 10/07/2002 13:47

People in NYC are being threatened with having their cable internet access cut off for sharing it (article). I don't know where to stand on this subject. I have an 802.11b network that is sharing DSL. However, it is WEP "protected" and I don't publish my location as being open. I also don't share my connection with my AOL-using neighbors.

Sharing and publishing a totally open cable modem hookup is wrong IMHO. I think it's just as bad as re-broadcasting HBO over a VHF signal that any TV can tune to.

If I didn't have to pay for cable TV when I didn't watch it, I'd support them.

Well, here with Cablevision, access is $29.99 when you have cable and $39.99 when you don't. DSL is $49.99 from Verizon which is pretty-much the only game in town. So, cable is still cheaper.

Re-reading my post, I wasn't clear in my sarcasm hehe. I meant that if I had cable TV service for this month but will be out of town for 3 weeks, it'd be nice to prorate. And your agreement says you get so many GB of uploads or downloads a month, it shouldn't matter. You've paid for it...

Just my opinon hehe.
