karma - direct ethernet connection set up - 21/10/2003 18:02

hello guys,

can anyone explain how to set up an ethernet connection with the karma using a direct / cross over cable? people are going to need this if they want to use RMMlite.

- the manual says to pick an IP address for the computer in the range of 192.168.0.x What address should be put in the Karma manually?

- In my case, using another address in the same range, I have the network icon on the karma, the lights at the back of the craddle are on but not blinking. RMMLite does not see the player, neither the browser.

any reco?

thanks

the lights at the back of the craddle are on but not blinking.
Are both lights on, solid and steady?

If so, no IP address setting is going to help you, that's a frozen ethernet port. It's died during the initial handshaking negotiation where it's attempting to set 10/100 and Half/Full duplex.

I get this problem on the Linksys switch I have at home.

You can *try* forcing your ethernet card to 10 full duplex or 100 half duplex and see if that fixes it.

A working ethernet port will have only one light on steady, and the other light will be off most of the time except it will blink when data is being transferred on the network.

Assuming you can get the ethernet port working at all, you should set:

PC:
IP address: 192.168.0.x
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway (Leave Blank or all zeroes or whatever it takes to count that field as disabled)

Karma:
IP address: 192.168.0.y
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway (Leave Blank or all zeroes or whatever it takes to count that field as disabled)

Note that "x" and "y" in the above two descriptions must be different. For instance, the PC could be 1 and the Karma could be 2, but they can't both be 1.

Do you get a page not found error or do you get the welcome to rio karma screen and get an error when launching RMML.

You can pick any number you want for the ip address as long as it isn't the same one you used in the pc. You also have to make the pc ip address in the same range and use the same subnet mask for the karma and the pc. Like use 192.168.1.10 for the pc and 192.168.1.11 for the karma and use 255.255.255.000 for the subnet for both.

You can also try just downloading the .jar file from http://www.inzyme.com/rio/index.html and just run it without the webbrowser.

Though if he's not getting the web page, there's good odds he's probably not going to be able to get an ethernet connection w/ RMML either. Certainly worth a shot, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I let the karma and my powerbook choose link-local or whatever they're called addresses (169.254 netblock) and then just told the mac to find the karma at the ip address it claimed; That worked fine.

Note that x and y must be between 1 and 254 inclusive - 0 and 255 are invalid.

hello guys

thank you all so much for your help. This is very useful. Here is where we stand:

Direct connection cross over cable:
- IP adress, subnet, etc. all correct as mentioned in your replies.
- ethernet port seems frozen: lights are on but not blinking. I will try to do what tfabris explains. e.g. try to force the ethernet card in 10 full duplex or 100 half duplex. Any reco?

My Rio is working fine on a DHCP but that's at work

Thanks to whoever is maintaining RMMLite. This is great. If people need QA, I'll be happy to contribute.

thanks

tempo - We known that it is possible that *some* units will only get 10MB when using crossover cable.
