Rio Karma in Canada?

Rio Karma in Canada? - 27/12/2003 17:50

Anybody know where's the best place to buy a Karma in Canada? Specifically the London and Toronto area. I'm going to be over in for a couple of weeks in January and was thinking of picking up a Karma.

Tiger Direct Canada have it for $410.99 but it's listed as 1-2 weeks lead time. I guess I could buy it and ship it to one of my friends... A problem with that is I'd be using a credit card from the UK but shipping to a Canadian address. Most mail order places don't like that for obvious reasons!

I would just buy it in the UK but nobody has them here yet!

Get your Canadian friend(s) to buy it for you, and reimburse them with cash or paypal.

Cheers

Didn't think of that It would save me having to wander around trying to find it in Toronto. I'd have to send them the cash first though as they're all broke students still

Easily done. Just have one of them order a Karma from the USA (say, Amazon.com or somewhere similar). Easy to look up the price in advance, and almost always cheaper that way than buying the same item locally in Canada (especially given the recent drops in USA currency).

Are they actually shipping them, though?

Also, you will pay a lot more from Amazon.co.uk than Amazon.com (or a local reseller in the US). Assuming you are not fussy about VAT and import duties and warranties and such...

They ship in 1 to 2 weeks but are in stock as I asked.

Amazon.com only give 90 days warranty. But .co.uk gives 1 year so its worth the extra in my opinion. Especially after we will get stung for vat and customs taxes - it will likely work out the same anyway. I just like the peace of mind of an extra warranty on such a product.

Do Amazon.com even ship to UK?

TigerDirect say it's 1 year warranty as well for the Canadian version.
Manufactured by: Rio
Mfg Part No: 90260461
Shipping Weight: 2.0 pound
Limited Warranty:
12 months parts; 12 months labor
Amazon.com will only ship the Karma to the US according to it's product page.

Tiger Direct seems to add PST and the new $25 levy after the fact. So, some hidden costs, but shorter delivery time. So, your tigerdirect quote is a bit low. Plus, they accidentally charged someone a $50 brokerage fee, so be careful. And their 12 mo. manufacturer warranty seems to be incorrect (Rio's is 90 days), so if you buy from them, capture that screen in case you have to hold them to it, down the line. Blister pack is just put in a box without packing foam, so it bounces around a bit, too, I've read.

ecost.com and etronics.com ship through the Canada Post service, borderfree.com, which guarantees the full price, up front. I've used them and like it. But, it could take up to 18 days to get in to Canada. I'd choose the faster delivery time and then cross your fingers.

Future Shop is said to be bringing in Karma in late Jan, early Feb for around $550. In Caanda, Future Shop and Best Buy pretend to comepete against each other, but they're actually the same company. So, they often carve up product lines, between the stores.

Nitrus has just appered in Best Buys at $299CDN, as the MSRP is about $429, I believe. To give you an idea, the Chibas are going for $329 at Best Buy, so I think they've made a pricing mistake. If you want a Nitrus, act quickly or pre-order at the price, in case it is a real mistake. It must be a mistake, as it costs about the same to ship a Nitrus up from the U.S. through Borderfee, which is unusual, as electronics are usually jacked up in Canada.

Keating Technologies in Markham is distributing Rio products in Canada. They're located in Markahm and have a website with contact people for the Rio line on their site.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately they don't ship outside UK - not even continental Europe. I could of course take them to court in Brussels over it, but...

Thanks! Appreciated! I am actually OK waiting for local availability - at least for now. Might take you up on your offer if I run out of patience

Tiger Direct seems to add PST and the new $25 levy after the fact.

The PST levy... is that the fee that is being added to Canadian media to compensate for piracy?

I would take that as a green light to go ahead and steal all the music I wanted on the premise that I had already paid for it, so why not?

Wonder if that would hold up legally?

That's fine for Canada. You can download all you want without problem. Just don't host/share what you've downloaded for others.
