LED life - 05/05/2004 10:43

Hi folks,

I have a vague memory about LED's (assuming the Karma uses LED's...) lasting at least several years.

But can anyone confirm the likely life of the LED's used in the display (specifically the backlight) and the docking port?

Particularly the backlight LED(s) as ideally I would like to have the backlight on the entire time (a great feature, missing in my Nomad Jukebox 3).

TIA

The backlight in the Karma is something called OLED if I recall correctly. It turns off to save battery power, not because they're worried about it burning out.

Under the settings menu there is an option to have the backlight remain on all the time. It will use power, though, if you are running on battery.

The backlight is EL (electroluminesent), which will get gradually less bright over a period of many years. As others have pointed out, the battery consumption is a much bigger problem.

The LED's in the dock will last indefinitely - well a *long* time anyway. I've never known an LED to wear out.

Darn, I always get EL and OL mixed up.

Unless, of course, you're like me and your dock light wears out after less than a month. Then you can just assume that you bought something shitty for an exhorbitant amount of money

I would guess it was some component failure other than an LED though
