Solid-state players - 20/07/2004 17:51

Since I've all but given up on my karma ever breathing again, I was looking into a solid-state player (so I can use it on the motorcycle). I was hoping to find one with removable media (specifically CF since that's what my camera uses) so I could get up to 1GB, but nobody seems to make these any more. The best I've found so far is the 'NEX IIe' on eBay.

Are there decent removable media players still on the market?

Yes, you've just got to switch to Secure Digital wich appears to be the winner in the smaller flash card contest. (But don't trust me, I bet on smart media in '97, and minidiscs shortly after that)

Compact Flash is good because of large size. That's a given. However, it's bad because it's very, very slow; and it only gets slower. I owned a CF based RCA Lyra a while back and after maybe a week of having the same song on theplayer I would have to delete and re-copy it so I wasn't waiting 3+ seconds for the song to load......as opposed to the normal 1 or so.... Similarily, SmartMeda, SD and MMC do not have these problems. Because of this, nobody makes CF based players anymore, because they're slow as all hell.

My Rio Cali accepts SD or MMC up to 1GB. Good luck finding a 1GB SD, though.

Thanks. Good points. I didn't realize Rio's players had expansion slots. It just sucks that it's about the same price for 1/20 the capacity of Karma. Maybe I'll just do without until the prices come down a little more.

512MB SD cards are much more affordable right now, and available anywhere.
