Is the SigmaTel chip in ... (this player) - 28/12/2005 17:37

Greetings!

I ran into a 1GB flash MobiBLU 1500i today. I must say, I am really quite impressed at the feature set packed into this tiny 24mm cube, especially after seeing it and hearing it in person. I was just curious if the SigmaTel chipset is used in it. Edit: Especially after running the firmware upgrader and seeing a "chip version" of "3500" in the results. Granted, not the newest one with all of the Cambridge team mods, but...

A large proportion of flash MP3 player appear to have SigmaTel chips inside so it wouldn't be too suprising. Atmel are reasonably popular as well.

The 3400/3500 series was used in all the Rio flash players from the S10 on, as well as Nitrus and Carbon. It's Sigmatel's bread and butter for portable devices, so I'm sure they were interested in the software Rio made for the 3500 just as much as Rio's ARM software.

I do think it's likely that we'll see several other manufacturers release 3500 devices with Rio's software on them, although I have no way of knowing if the MobiBlu device is one of them. I, for one, am only interested in the players with the 3600 and the empeg software, if and when one might be available to purchase. I will buy the first one I see, assuming that it doesn't have some stupid crippling limitation or cost >$1000.

I'm about 99.98% sure that that's a Sigmatel 35xx, yes. A cute player, but I'm not sure a cube is really the best shape to fit in your pocket!

Very good point about the form factor - it is certainly not good for most pockets.

From the looks of the loop on the top of it, I would say the idea is to hang it around your neck. After all, what's the point in spending $100's on a device that nobody can see

Cheers

It is like those crappy iPod earphones. Everybody loves them for some bizarre reason even though they're not very good earphones.

Damn, I just ran into one of these at frys and it's tiny. Think sugar cube, perhaps a bit larger than a sugar cube, but not much. The one I ran into was 2GB for ~150 if I remember correctly. Neat little thing. Pretty useless, but I'd love to get one as a party favor.

I remember seeing news about this player a few months ago.
The website lists the size as 25mm^3. That's one heckuva sugar cube!
Matthew- you want to get some to give out as party favors? I'm so there, man!
