Receiver won't find server

Receiver won't find server - 26/01/2002 16:28

Hi all,

I'm trying to use a receiver with Win XP RC2 using the included HPNA card, but my receiver cannot find the server (no blue note).

The software and the HPNA card installed just fine, I've set up the manager to use the HPNA card and not to use the ethernet card that connects to my DSL, and the manager finds the receiver fine, and is set to serve music to it.

However, my receiver keeps searching for a server, and the tray icon stays red.

I've tried this with the reciever in another room and with it plugged directly into the HPNA card, with the same result. I've also tried building a music database with only a few files in it.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Mess with the "gateway" settings, including the checkbox (not sure where it is) that says "use default gateway on remote network". See if that's messing you up.

The "gateway" is the router that goes out to the internet (via your DSL), and if your receiver-server (HPNA) is trying to talk to the gateway, the receiver itself won't see a thing.

Was that it?

The TCP/IP settings for the HPNA card are set to automatically obtain IP address, so there's no gateway specified. My ethernet card uses my static IP as its gateway.

Is there anyway I can specify the address of the receiver?

OK, I'm up and running at last -- very cool.

In case it comes up again...

I'm using ZoneAlarm as a firewall, and needed to specify the receiver as a trusted local computer.

I assumed letting the audio manager pass the firewall would do it, but this being my only home-networking experience, I didn't think to specify the receiver as well.

I did have to give it an ip-range -- 169.x.x.x -- is that overkill? How can I find out what range my receiver will use?

You should be using 169.254.x.x, with an netmask of 255.255.0.0

There are blocks in the 169.x.x.x range that are valid Internet addresses.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

Damn, that was going to be my next suggestion.

Glad you found it.
