Using reciever through Aux in of empeg

Using reciever through Aux in of empeg - 09/03/2002 11:00

Alrighty, as weird of a setup as this may sound, humor me. I built a home component box for my empeg, and now want to run the reciever out through the AUX in of the empeg. So it's like this:

Rio Reciever -> empeg AUX in (on sled) -> Kenwood stereo reciever.

It sounds like crap. There's clipping all over the place that wasn't there when the reciever was going straight into the Kenwood. No matter what i do with the volumes on all of the units, the noise doesn't go away. The Volume on the Rio Reciever is irrelevent as it has no effect on the RCA outs, the empeg is at 0db like it should be, and i just can't figure out where the clipping/static is coming from. Any ideas?

Interesting. You're using the same inputs on the Kenwood as you always had? For instance, you're not using the phono input on the kenwood?

Hey, Loren, it also occurs to me that someone has a software hack for the receiver, somewhere on this BBS, that allows you to control the volume of the line-outs. Maybe you just need to run that hack, allowing you to turn down the line-out volume?

Yeah, i'm using the same inputs and the same cables. I tried a different set of cables, i even opened the case up, and ran the RCA's from the reciever straight into the RCA inputs on the Docking connector to make sure i didn't have shody solder connections on the RCA jack panel on the component box. It still didn't go away. Sucks. I'll have a look around for that volume hack, i remember seeing that too. I'll let ya know how it goes. Thanks!

It's here:

http://www.mock.com/receiver/audio/

I was going to add the patch to my VolAdj port ( http://www.norman.cx/receiver/ ) as well, but on my unit it seemed to add digital noise to the speaker outputs, so I removed it.

There is a link to one on the page that I pointed you to:

http://www.mock.com/receiver/audio/

You then need tools to merge the kernel into the receiver.arf file, if you don't have a Linux box handy then you will need one of:

- my Receiver Tweaker which only replaces zImage files in arf files
- Frank's tool which is more flexible, it can be used to add other files to the arf file (sorry don't have the link, try searching on the bbs)
- a copy of tar from the Cygwin's Unix tools for Windows

You can use the displayserver .arf file from http://empeg.dyndns.org/receiver
It's also got the volume hack.

Okay, kick ass, it works. The clipping seems to occur when i turn the volume on the receiver up past around 40. After futzing with the levels on my Kenwood reciever and the Rio Reciever... i found a noiseless happy medium. Thanks all!!!

Anyone know what's happened to Jeff Mock? I've not been able to connect to his ftp site for ages. Anyone else have his audiohack kernel I could grab?
