Serving off of Linux - where to start?

Serving off of Linux - where to start? - 10/02/2006 18:07

Hey all. I bought a DDAR a while back and got the original arm software running and used my DDAR at work quite easily. But then I took it home and it lay fallow for a year or so.

I am now ready to start using it again, but I want to run it off of linux - i.e. Have my MP3s on a Linux fileserver. Is there a simple server package that I can load on my server? Or do I need to swap out the firmware on the DDAR first?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

The DDAR has no firmware of its own. It gets its firmware from the server when it's first powered on. Yes, there are linux packages. I think some of them are still being updated and some of them are linked from the FAQ section right here on this very BBS. Give some of those a shot.

Did you manage to get it to work? I was trying to configure it yesterday and I am not getting much luck with it.

I'm real impressed with tRio and JReceiver, which I've got running on FreeBSD.

Going this route is NOT the easy way to go; you'll be installing and troubleshooting no fewer than 4 packages, and that's if you're already running MySQL.

Two wonderful consequences of this are 1) When the wife's Windows 2000 machine locks up, the music keeps rolling and 2) My two Rios can play the same music simultaneously

The only remaining problem I have is that I can't get JReceiver to start properly on boot. I can restart it after boot, and it works great then. Have placed it the end of the rc.d list of daemons to start. Suspect it's nabbing the wrong java somehow. Small matter, I reboot every couple months on average.

What version of Java are you using?
