MK1 freezing problem

MK1 freezing problem - 16/07/2002 21:22

My Mark 1 has been freezing a lot lately. I replaced the original Toshiba 6GB drive with a new Toshiba 20GB drive because of similar issues. It started to happen again so I upgraded the software but it's still freezing and once in a while it comes up with no hard drive. Is my drive going bad?
If so I have some B*tching to do to Toshiba. Any info will help.

Thanks

Before you assume bad hard drive, check the cabling carefully, as well as making sure the hard drive shock mounts haven't come undone.

My Mk1 had one of the motherboard jumpers rubbing a hole into its cable...

Thanks for the reply Tony. I just checked all the connections and jumpers and they all seem fine. The drive has a rattle in it as does my old 6GB Toshiba drive. The label on the drive states that rattle noise is normal but I don't remember hearing it when I installed the new drive. Has any one else had problems with toshiba drives?

The rattle is perfectly normal (not just for Toshiba 2.5" drives), possibly you never noticed it before?. It's mentioned here in the FAQ too.

I use a Toshiba 30GB drive in my empeg and my laptops both have Toshiba drives too - no problems at all, they are good drives IMHO.
