FAQ note? Hard drive jumper problem

FAQ note? Hard drive jumper problem - 08/01/2003 16:20

Just for reference, a note ought to be added to the FAQ. The hard drives need to be jumpered properly to work (master/slave). The one I just ordered had a jumper shaken loose in shipment. Took me 2 hours to figure out what was wrong with it.

Jumpers are mentioned in both the FAQ and in the drive-upgrade guide. Dunno what else to say?

I know it mentions them, but.....

In the drive-upgrade guide, it mentions setting jumpers at the beginning:
"You'll need to configure the disk drives in an IDE master/slave configuration, which will probably require a jumper to be installed on some pins on the second disk drive."

However, the guide neglects to mention it again when it becomes relevant, at the end of the FORMAT section. That's when the user is going to need to set the jumpers properly before booting up with both drives and finishing up.

Just a minor quibble. The guide, as a whole, is excellent.

Keep up the good work,

At that point in the procedure (based on the way the steps are laid out), you shouldn't need to apply a jumper. The drive should be jumperless, the way it comes out of the bag, to be configured as a primary.

Unless there's laptop drives out there which require a jumper to be ADDED to be a primary. Haven't seen one like that before.

i actually dont see the point. in the format section, you're supposed to unplug one of the drives... therefore it wouldnt matter if the drive is set as slave or master..... or is there something about laptop drives that are different from regular 3.5" drives.

At the end of it, you (presumably) plug them both in. It is only at that point that it actually matters that one is set to slave and the other master. If they are both set to master, it won't work (hard drive not found).

from the hdd upgrade guide:

  • After formatting the new drive and installing the developer version of the player software onto it, leave it plugged into the primary drive spot.
  • Remove the power from the player.
  • Plug the old drive into the secondary spot (setting master/slave jumpers as necessary if it's a Mark 2 player, or using the second IDE header and second cable if it's a Mark 1).

i don't see what other clarification is needed.
