New empeg - 23/01/2003 05:59

bought an empeg over the weekend (woohoo) and just got it today.
Hooked it up to my network, got assigned an IP address, synch'd and everythings ok. I try and connect to it through hyperterminal via COM2 using the serial cable supplied from the back of the sled and it connects just nothing comes up on the screen, no scrolling text. am i doing something wrong?

Greetings!

The sled serial port's speed is (if I remember correctly) 4800. The main port on the player itself defaults to 115200. Check your speed settings.

This may sound silly, but....

Is the unit getting any power? The sled is designed to be hooked up in the car with a DC power source. Most people don't have those right next to their computer.

Generally, the way to hook it up to your computer is without the sled (using the AC cord for power) with ethernet/USB and the supplied serial (null modem?) cable for hyperterminal or firmware updates.

thanks. ill check the speed settings.

re the power, its plugged into the mains but i didnt know u had to give the sled power? now you mention it, it might be that. but im gonna buy a serial cable (as mine didnt come with it - the seller probably kept it) and try it like that.

Thanks alot anyway

The serial cable supplied will work directly on the back of the empeg itself, but not on the sled. One is DTE, one is DCE. You'll need to use a null-modem adaptor with the cable in order to use it with the sled.

This is not really a good idea anyway - the sled also has other empeg-related signals on some of it's serial port connections, (eg RA, and dimmer), and you want to be sure that these aren't connected directly to your PC. You could wire your own cable to be sure - you only need TxD, RxD and Gnd, but it's easier just to use the serial port on the back of the empeg itself.

Search the FAQ on "Hyperterminal" for some troubleshooting steps.

Ironically, 'bitted' is described as the past tense of a verb 'to bitt' in the field of locksmithing.

Apparantly, 'bitting' is the act of setting the individual pin heights in a multi-pin barrel lock. (eg Yale..)

Someone else had a good read of the latest attack on mastered locks then?
