i think i made a grave error. after installing charcoalgray99's remote control i found that it would not function with my version of IE so i decided to remove it from my rio. well i think i may have deleted something extra from the rio because i can no longer sync my player with emplode. when i try to sync it it gives me this error:

download failed while rebuilding database.
error 0xc0041002

the player rebuilds the database (slowly) each time it boots but plays fine.

i read the faq and searched the msg board and tried:

1) installing B13 dev image and tried using hyperterminal to refreesh the database. no luck syncing after that.

2) tried installing 1.03 and now emplode cannot find the player at all.

here is my hyperterminal log from b13 dev. can anyone help me restore the files i might have deleted?

In your log image there, I'm not seeing that you actually dropped to a BASH prompt to delete the database and start over. It looks like you simply typed the deletion commands into the player's serial interface. When you pressed "Q" and Enter, it should have dropped you to a shell prompt (looks sort of like a DOS prompt) and it didn't.

Put developer beta 13 back on there, and make sure it really does drop you to a shell prompt before following the rest of these instructions.

Also remember that the major emplode version and the major player version must match in order for the synch to work. (i.e., it must be player 2.0-something and emplode 2.0-something).

Re: read.the.faq/searched.msg.board-rio.won't.sync - 01/02/2003 12:34

Greetings!

Reinstall the most recent emplode first. The two program versions (player and emplode) must be in sync with each other. That is why the 1.03 emplode is not finding the player.

Once you have it back, go into the player and do this. Basically, you would need to rebuild the database. I know you tried it. An alternative...

A nice, easy trick from the rsync guide is to leave the player in read/write mode and launch the player application from command line. This will rebuild the databases once, and write them directly to their appropriate files. When you get a shell prompt, do:

rw
rwm
rm /drive0/var/database
rm /drive0/var/playlists
rm /drive0/var/tags
player

This will rebuild your databases. It will take a while. Enter a "q" once the build is completed. This will exit the player application and drop you back to shell.

rom
ro
exit

Best to reboot at this point. Try a sync now...

P.S. - Simultaneous editing...

Re: read.the.faq/searched.msg.board-rio.won't.sync - 01/02/2003 13:28

thanks for the quick replies. i did not realize that i was not being patient enough when trying to get to the BASH prompt. well it looks like i did delete something because i get this error:

/empeg/var/database': No such file or directory

or

rm: cannot remove `/drive0/var/database': No such file or directory

excuse my lack of technical literacy . . . but how do i restore/create the var directory since it appears i deleted it?

Just to add to your solution, Paul...

I was getting the same error from tags.cpp as the original poster, and I found I had to delete

/drive1/var/tags
/drive1/var/database
/drive1/var/playlist

to get my player to re-create the database successfully. This may be because when I did my drive upgrade I re-ordered the drives.

Hmm... I thought it ignored the /drive1/var directory and its contents. I did not know that it would try to process files there. Good tip!
