Is my tuner fixable?

Is my tuner fixable? - 11/03/2003 16:01

Awhile back my tuner quit working for FM stations. The volume level is extremely low even when cranked, but the signal strength is fine. AM is normal, so I can only assume there is something burnt out on the output for the FM side. Anyone know if it can be fixed or want a crack at it? I'm not the tear it apart and fix it kind of guy, so it's beyond me... Heck, if you have a tuner from Patrick assembled, I'll trade you my original plus some cash for a swap...

I would assume that you have an aplified antenna and that is what's broken. The antenna on your car is only for FM as far as I know, so AM would not be affected.

Your antenna would be the first thing I check.

He said his volume is low while signal strength is still OK.

So his problem is obviously not related to the antenna (or antenna amplifier).

Others have been describing similar tuner problems, and we've been trying to get to the bottom of it. Bad FM reception despite a full signal strength meter was one of the symptoms. Normally, I'd point you to the FAQ about the extension cable, but you said it used to work fine.

Have you checked the wiring, especially the antennat itself, and also the tuner connector where it connects to the sled?

You've probably got a dry solder joint on an opamp. Contact support for a repair.

could you post pics of said solder joint for those who might want to check it and repair it ourselves??

It did this in my old truck and the new truck using my extra docking sled that was never mounted in any vehicle before this one, so I'm 90% sure it's the tuner itself. It doesn't seem that reception is the problem because you can barely hear it at max volume and it sounds like the signal is fine, and the signal strength meter would fluctuate like normal between 4 and 5 on the strongest station here.
I'll contact support. Thanks!!!

Now that I'm no longer handling support, I don't have either a tuner module to hand. If someone can take a picture of the inside of a module and post it here, I'll label it.
