AC power supply question

AC power supply question - 17/08/2000 03:49

I have searched through the messages looking for information on replacement AC power supplies for the Mk 1 but I didn't see an answer to my particular question.

I have a spare AC adapter for a laptop computer with the following specs: Output 16V 3.36 amps. Is this too much for the empeg? I've misplaced my original power adapter and I want to use this one instead (if possible).

One thing you might want to do (if you've got the tool) is to see if it's really putting out the voltage that's printed on the label.

If I recall, one of the extra power supplies I'm using for the Empeg says 15v on it, but it's really only putting out about 12v when you measure it.

Honestly, I don't know what would happen to the Empeg if you fed it too much power. All of the questions previously posted were concerned with too little power, not too much. Hugo, do you have any wise words in this department?

Sounds like you have a ac power adapter made for an IBM Thinkpad? If so, i'll gladly swap you:)

It'll be a switch-mode PSU, the amount of current it's *capable* of outputting is fairly irrelevant, as long as it can meet the minimum requirements.

Check it has centre positive (probably says on the label) and if the jack fits it should work. Keep an eye on the empeg as you plug it in, if it doesn't come up immediately pull the power out. There's quite a bit of protection circuitry to deal with reverse polarity (etc) but it's always better to be on the safe side!

Well, last night I just bit the bullet and I plugged the above mentioned power adapter into my empeg. It powered up...no smoke or fire...and everything seems to work perfectly.

And as "dionysus" stated below... yes, it is a Thinkpad power adapter (I now see that Thinkpad adapters are listed in the AC adapter post in the FAQ area - missed it before...doh!)

Happy to have my empeg working on my desk again!

As long as the volt is within the correct range, and the polarization is correct you can have as many amps you want if it meets the requierments.
