Tuner is recognised, but cannot be controlled

Tuner is recognised, but cannot be controlled - 04/08/2004 15:34

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone can help me.

I've just discovered that my empeg tuner module (an original, not a PCA special) has gone out to lunch. The module is recognised and can be selected as a source in the menus, but any attempts to control it have no effect. It's no longer possible to tune it into any stations, or do anything else with it for that matter.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what might be wrong.

Thanks,

Bagpuss.

Yes, one or more of the control wires may have come loose. Please click here.

Thanks for the quick reply Tony.

I did check the wires, but I guess one could still be loose. I'll go over them with the soldering iron, and see if it makes any difference.

Checking the wires is all that should be needed. If they don't come loose with a gentle tug, they're OK. The next thing to look for is broken solder connections on the printed circuit board in the tuner itself.

What does it (not) do when attempting to "control" it?

The signal wires used for detection are pretty much the same as for "control".. so if it can be detected, it should be functional.

Bad antenna connection?

The tuner is impossible to tune. If you hold down either of the left or right buttons, then it fails to seek. It always stays on the initial frequency (87.5, I think).

In all other respects, it appears functional, as you can hear static on both FM and MW.

Just checked the module for any signs of damage, and I can't see anything obvious. There are no dry joints that I can see, and all the components seem to be okay.

Any clues on what else to look for?

Thanks,

Wait, I think that front-panel seek is non-functional in certain software versions. If you have no presets coded, then I don't think the L/R buttons do anything useful. Not certain of that.

Try entering a frequency directly with the remote. Use the Direct/OK button on the Kenwood remote, or the Search button on the Rio remote and see if it lets you put in a frequency and see if that works.

Use the Hijack "KnobSeek" function (enable PopUp0, then use a short knob press to bring up Hijack menu, spin knob until KnobSeek appears, press again, and then the knob acts as a rotary manual tuning knob).

Thanks Tony and Mark for the suggestions. I will give them a try, and see what happens.

As for the left and right buttons, I have been used to a short press moving through the presets (which still works, but doesn't help as all the presets are the same frequency), and a held press causing the tuner to seek tune (which no longer works).

Nothing has changed in the empeg software between this working and not working, except the version of the Hijack kernel (v378 currently). I have tried reverting back to previous versions of Hijack, but I can't be certain which was the last version that it definitely worked under.

In any event, I'd be mightily surprised if it turned out to be a Hijiack problem, as I've never seen anything like this before, and I can't find any other reports of people having the same problem.

Have you tried operating the tuner using the remote, rather than the front panel?

Have you got any other problems on your empeg, not the tuner, such as the display doing weird stuff?

If it is 2.0 final it is probably this, right?

tuner seek bug

Running v3 alpha is one solution.

I'm a bit confused about the other solutions. Is there a workaround with 2.0 final and hijack that allows you to seek up/down for stations, not just enter frequencies or tune manually?
