Empeg won't turn on after boot up

Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 15/04/2005 16:12

I dont know if it actually finishes booting up. The last thing it showed during boot up is "loading visuals" and then it seems to go into the standby mode as usual only the blinking standby light doesn't illuminate and i am unable to turn the empeg on. I just formated the hard drive and reloaded my songs by the way, because when trying to add a second hard drive i plugged the wrong one up accidently formatted the original hard drive. SMART move huh? Anyway i just my empeg to work as it once did...HELP!!!

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 15/04/2005 16:49

Can you get in via the serial console?

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 15/04/2005 18:08

yeah...well, i guess. I just used emplode and loaded more songs on it.

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 15/04/2005 18:36

I just used the hyperterminal and turned the empeg on by entering play. The buttons are fully functional and everything works as it should. But once it is turned off it can only be turned back on by the hyperterminal.

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 15/04/2005 18:55

Alright, I'm just shooting in the dark here, but it seems like it's more likely config rather than something broken. Reinstalling the empeg software (v2 or v3alpha8 if you need ogg vorbis) will clean up almost everything that might be wrong =except= for bad entries in config.ini. If you've been playing games with the visuals, there might be a bad visual in there, like lavatory_floor in the v3alphas.

Installing hijack can't hurt, and makes it much easier to install different versions of the empleg software using the upgrader program.

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 15/04/2005 19:13

i just reinstalled v2.00 and hijack. But nothing new. Where do i get v3alpha8 so i can try to see if it will help?
Posted by: Shonky

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 15/04/2005 20:18

Forget the alpha for now - it will probably not help. If it's really have "upgraded" it successfully, it should just work (tm) unless there's a hardware problem or something else.

Instead get a boot log as detailed here and post it, so we can maybe see what's happening. That would be a good start at least.

Edit: Missed the bit about the buttons working after "waking" it up in emplode... Very strange.

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 15/04/2005 20:51

Also please give us a copy of your config.ini

And yeah, don't mess with v3a8 just yet.

Okay i'll wait on that...heres the boot log atleast i think this is the boot log. What is "config.ini" though?
Thanks for the help!!

I also just installed the developer software instead of the consumer software. In case that changes things

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 19/04/2005 16:06

I actually just turned it on throught he hyperterminal and unplugged the power instead of turning it off, so it will come on without me having to hit any buttons. BUT, when doing this i realized the remote also will not work any more.

By the way was anyone able to make anything out of the logs i gave? Or were they even the right logs?

Everything looks pretty normal there. Can you get a copy of config.ini

This describes how to get to it:

I went to "Tools" , "Edit Config.ini" and then just copied and pasted what was on there already and got this.

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 22/04/2005 23:34

Well, that looks pretty normal. Huh.

I'm not sure that I can visualize exactly what's happening, because all of the output looks reasonable. You have a mlord dock, right? Can you slowly describe what happens when you apply power to the player when it's not in the dock? Do you have telnetd installed? Have you tried running EmpegFace to see what it shows?

What's your custom logo? I'm clutching at straws here, but have you tried different boot logos? Could a logo be corrupt?

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 23/04/2005 01:04

Nothing in a custom logo could cause a boot up problem as far as I know.

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 23/04/2005 11:46

No, i don't have a dock, but when i apply power it boots up and goes to the standby screen. The standby light that should normally blink after boot up does not come on after boot up. The player cannot be turned on after boot up unless i use the hyperterminal.

How do you mean, use Hyperterminal? Do you mean that the player's running, and you have to give it the serial command to get it to start playing music? If you do this, does the screen come on properly?

I assume that there is no sound output until you do this? In fact, does the sound come out once you've done this?

All of this suggests to me that maybe the display panel is not working -- i.e. the buttons aren't responding. Can we try to chase this possibility down a little more?

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 23/04/2005 12:00

no, i don t think its the buttons because after i enter play in the hyperterminal and the player is on the buttons are fully functional.

What do you mean "enter play"? Do you mean you type in the word "play" and press Enter? Or something else?

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 24/04/2005 21:58

I got it from the list of Serial Port Commands by pushing the space bar and then pushing enter in the terminal it tells the empeg to "play"

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 25/04/2005 00:38

And when you do this, the screen comes on?
Posted by: nahbrah

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 25/04/2005 00:47

Yep, and everything works as it should EXCEPT the remote (the original Rio remote) will not work and the standby light that, if i remember correctly, should turn off when the player is on, stays lit.

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 25/04/2005 01:28

If it were in a docking sled, I'd say that your problem was 12 volts applied to the amp remote wire.

Otherwise, you're talking about a very strange hardware fault, and Rob or Stu needs to take a look at it.

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 25/04/2005 10:43

Try this temporary fix:

When the unit is booting up, press the keys rapidly, Especially at the part when the unit turns off. I have the same problem, and until I can spare the time to find the short that is keeping my screen dim, and keeping it occasionally from booting up past the first screen, this seems to help by keeping the voltage going.

It sounds ridiculous, but it worked for me.

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 26/04/2005 04:16

Whoa, I haven't read this forum in a while. "nahbrah" is my brother... thanks guys for helping him track this down, I was stumped.

Kyle... Stu, as Tony mentioned, is in Mandeville, so you might wanna talk to him and arrange a meet up. It's about as far as N.O. on the other side of the lake.

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 26/04/2005 16:30

This is true, i am his brother...while listening to the empeg last night a message popped up for the first time....."segfault error".....maybe this will help
Posted by: mlord

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 26/04/2005 19:16

"segfault error" occurs "normally" from time to time for me when running v3alpha software. But it should be pretty rare on a stock player running v2final.

Cheers

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 13/11/2005 22:45

This player is now at my house, as is Kyle, and I'm trying to troubleshoot it. It does exactly as he stated... really strange stuff.

Summary:
As the empeg boots, the screen is normal other than a faint increase in brightness followed by a slow dimming before it blips out and goes black once the player is running. From there, black screen, no Stdby LED, no button controls. To get the display to wake up you have to start the player playing via hyperterminal, then it pops right up, though the stdby LED stays on. The display is VERY dim, and on forced DC mode, the dimmer settings have NO effect at all.

EDIT: I also just checked his config.ini and it is really stripped down... does this mean anything:

[synchronise]
seq_num=25
[wendy]
flag_amount=0
[custom]
wendy=
[searches]
amount=0
[VisualFavourites_AM]
count=0
[VisualFavourites_AUX]
count=0
[VisualFavourites_DSP]
count=0
[VisualFavourites_FM]
count=0

John... have you had any luck tracking this down?

Any other troubleshooting tips? What would cause a constant dim screen? I'm going to open it up and see if I find anything in the mean time.

EDIT 2: I'm also checking the fuse mentioned in thie FAQ entry

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 13/11/2005 23:05

Well, the display capacitor would be suspect. It can cause all sorts of odd behavior, but it doesn't seem like it could cause everything. Have you tried starting the player with -i?

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 13/11/2005 23:24

AH HA! Turns out the fuse mentioned in that FAQ entry is indeed blown. No continuity, while the other two fuses are fine.

Looks like I'll have to scrounge up one of those fuses, and Tony, you might want to add these symptoms to that FAQ entry once this is fixed... if it indeed fixes it.

Re: Empeg won't turn on after boot up - 17/11/2005 18:57

Replaced the fuse (after botching the first attempt by breaking off the tip of the new fuse... thank goodness I know myself well enough to always order spares!).

Empeg is good as new. PHEW! So Tony, if you get a chance you might want to add these symptoms to the FAQ.
