Quick question about Sony Stalk controls?

I have looked in the FAQ and had a search on the forums but I can't find the answer to a very basic query although I'm sure it must have been answered before.

If I buy one of the two compatible Sony stalk controllers and attach it to my PCATS tuner, will it only function whilst in tuner mode or can it be used to interface with the Empeg/Rio whilst playing MP3s?

It will function all the time, you do not have to be in tuner mode.
