Whine on aux and tuner sources

Whine on aux and tuner sources - 22/07/2008 12:51

I tried searching this forum for post about this topic, but wasn't able to find any resolutions. I gather what I'm experiencing is an alternator whine? Basically, when I'm on the tuner or aux sources, the more I press down on the gas pedal, the higher the pitch of the whine I'm hearing. It's quite annoying. What's the cause of this? What can I do about it? And is there a reason that the whine is louder some times more than others?

Thanks for your help.

It's probably a grounding issue.

One thing you can try quickly, is to connect the RCA grounds to the empeg chassis and, ensure that the empeg chassis is connected to the vehicle chassis. So that they are all at a (more or less) common ground voltage. That might help.

There have been a few known cases where noise on the Aux input was actually a fault in the player itself.

It's also possible you're hearing a good old fashioned ground loop.

Look here for a list of noise abatement tips.

I get a faint whine in the M3 but only on the tuner (haven't tried auxiliary). Via the MP3 player there is no whine at all.

The antenna in the BMW is a powered antenna though so I assume it's something to do with that.

Because it's fairly faint I've not bothered to investigate it much further.

I'm getting whine when using the radio but not using the AUX as the AUX is connected to a iPOD (SWMBO orders, tho I'm trying to get her music on with Wendy filters) or a mobile for hands free calls.

The alternator is very recently rebuilt. No whine at all when using the players. It's a PCATS tuner. Sled wiring is correct as per the FAQ.

Any ideas ?
