steering wheel remote? - 06/02/2001 09:57

Anyone been able to get the Pioneer CD-SR77 steering wheel remote to work with the empeg (Mark 2)? I'd like to use this one instead of the Kenwood. -John empeg Mark 2 (464) 12GB R/G/B

Hey John

Take a look below or do a search and you'll find some interesting post on just this...I happen to own a Pioneer steering wheel remote too (I am replacing a "fishfinder" with the Empeg) I was not happy to hear that our IR codes are not supported yet and may not ever be...Hugo says that they don't have the time to work out the codes for all of these remote brands. I (and others) was/were trying to convince Empeg however that the Pioneer one was probably worth supporting because it is such a good remote, probably the best on the market (my opinion)....John

It's not just a matter of the code groups that the remote sends out; Kenwood uses a 36.6 kHz base clock signal, and Pioneer (I think) uses 39.3 kHz. On a domestic device such as a TV, this means that the device doesn't even "hear" this alien remote, it's talking "too fast".

Unless the domestic IR receiver on the empeg is interrogated by software and there is no dedicated IC for decoding at a fixed base rate, I doubt there is even a way that the empeg can even recognise the frequency of the remote when sending. I would be quite happy to be proven wrong, however

The best thing to do (IMHO) is to use irDA compliant devices to talk to the second receiver in the empeg. That way, at least the codes and the Tx/Rx rates are standardised, and you just need to write a device driver to handle the port...

Yikes! I guess it 's gonna be the Kenwood for me.....Oh well, even my Pioneer never really worked that well with my Pioneer head unit, and I always found that weird...

Mmm, I'd say it'd have to be tried. I don't have the specs in front of me, but I think the IR receiver is a 38kHz one which will pass quite a wide band (at least +- a few kHz).

We've not come across any remotes which the empeg didn't pick anything up for - then again, we didn't go to the trouble of writing a recogniser for them either, Mike just looked at the debug output.

If the Pioneer remote sends RC5 format codes, it should be a pretty easy job to hack ther kernel for it (and map them into equivalent kenwood codes).
