DAB - 25/05/2001 12:06

Has anyone got any idea as to how you could start thinking about connecting one of the DAB boxs coming out for some stereos like the sony unit or could any of the empeg folks look into the futre for DAB. I have no idea about Digitla Audil Broadcasting but it looks like good stuff and imagine the Empeg could proabably handle this with ease.

I just know that they have a project in Germany since several years.
But in fact no one spend 1500 to 2500 Deutsch Mark (I think it's in this range) for a simple Radio.
So there are only a few people who can listen DAB programs and the private radiostations are not really interested in investing a lot of money in a technique no one uses.
Primary they wanted to turn off the regualar broadcasting in a few years but now they are thinking about turning off DAB.
I don't think that empeg/Rio will create a DAB tuner (I even don't know if you just have to change the tuner??) in this situation.

Incidentally, there's some wonderful prizes to be had, like one of the censored that Rob is bringing along...

This was mentioned before - Rob basically said that Empeg would consider the DAB tuner if there was demand.

As for DAB on a technical standpoint - it is expensive, similar to any new technology, but it's an evolution that *will* happen regardless of what people think - The BBC currently broadcast all national radio over DAB and there are quite a few Digital only radio stations (some of which are very good).

The audio quality is supurb, a significant leap forward from FM/AM and the auto-tuning functionality (which is designed for in car use) is brilliant (a lot better than AF on FM/RDS).

I'd personally pay for a DAB tuner for the empeg. It'd be more than fantastic, but in all seriousness I think that it's a long way away yet.

I'd also be willing to buy a DAB tuner for the empeg, I'd be willing to pay upto about 300UKP (and I'd have to buy a Mk2 to go with it).

Unfortunately, I think in the volumes we'd be able to sell (like, maybe 50 in total), the price would be nearer 600-700 pounds just for the dab tuner :(

How about an interface to one of the major manufacturers DAB boxes then ?

(yes, I know it's fairly unlikely, but I can still hope)

Re: DAB - 14/06/2001 09:54

Just to mention it: I'm very interested in buying a possible DAB Tuner. I would definitly buy one if it is equal oder less then 300 pounds........What about making a public vote ? Just to see whether there is demand ?

Re: DAB - 14/06/2001 10:31

I would buy one at £500 or less for an interface unit to an excisting DAB unit

Re: DAB - 15/06/2001 04:05

I would probably take one for that price.

I paid over £1000 for my home one, so I'm not adverse to spending for superior tech.

Can't imagine there are that many other who would though.

Re: DAB - 15/06/2001 04:07

What sort of interfaces do the boot-mounted ones have? If it's serial we should (with appropriate links into the player software, or some serious kernel hacking) be able to provide dab over serial???
