Gapless encoding with Lame - 08/10/2001 08:09

What's the best way (on Linux) to add the VBR headers to tunes encoded with lame --nogap? (Remember that lame 3.89 can't do -t with --nogap).

Does it work to re-encode the MP3 file using --mp3-input at the same quality setting? Will this produce the same bitstream, or will it degrade quality further? If nobody knows, I guess I could look at it using mp3x, but I was wondering if anyone else had researched this yet.

DoeS aNyBody know of a stand-alone Linux utility to add the VBR header?

Don't use 3.89 for nogap, please download the latest alpha. I think the vbr header thing is fixed in that one. I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know for sure.

The general attitutude towards reencoding mp3s is that it will degrade the quality. I don't know how the mp3 input switch works though.

You can use mp3trim to add a vbr header.

Er, 3.89 is the latest alpha, AFAICT http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=290. Anything newer than that is still in the CVS, which is as good as on the moon given our firewall policy.

Hi.

According to http://www.mp3dev.org/mp3/download/download.html, the CVS version is archived daily as http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cvstarballs/lame-cvsroot.tar.gz.
The above mentioned download URL also lists some other sources for the source .

Er, yes. I can't read, can I?

Sorry for being so stupid, and thanks to Sven for telling me how stupid I've been.
