Tuner help!

Tuner help! - 04/02/2002 13:36

I started this post in the general section however maybe someone here can help, I took my car to a stereo installer that had experiece with the rio units, he couldn't get the tuner to work even with a power antenna adaptor, I checked the FAQ and there were similar symptoms but after trying all the suggested solutions it still doesn't work.... He suggested that it was either a software issue or a bad unit.... the idea that I got a bad unit is unsettling because I got it from a user on this BBS for 200 bucks! When I got it, it was supposedly new in box and appeared that way... If it turns out to be a bad tuner is there any way to send it in and get it fixed? Also has anyone reported tuner issues with beta 2.7 with Hijack? I'll definately try reverting back to a earlier version.... But has anyone heard of any similar problems other than that on the FAQ?

Have you contacted David at [email protected] ? That's the official channel for obtaining support (and if you have the original receipt for the tuner I believe they will honor the waranty).

Hi,

Most people read all the forums, so theres no need to post in two different places.

Well, theres a lot of forums.... and this is for technical issues

Re: Tuner help! - 04/02/2002 18:57

I don't have the original receipt as I bought it supposedly "new in box" it appeared to be new in box, and have all the stickers (the one that says do not discard or your warranty is no good) and documentation with it. You think they'll still honor that?

"Well, theres a lot of forums"

Exactly. I read every message on every forum (Im not the only one left who does this) , so reading the same one twice doesn't seem necessary.

Were you trying to use the tuner with the extension attached or without? Some of the extensions had a wiring fault, I think.

Re: Tuner help! - 04/02/2002 20:35

already tested that... already tried a power antenna adaptor.... believe me I've tried everything 3 or 4 times, even took it to a professional installer! curious enough it's symptoms match that of a faulty wiring harness, however it does the same thing attached with no harness using the amp turn on.... I should also mention that my player seems to be stuck in home mode? Would that have anything to do with it? Could it be a faulty rio car player perhaps? See now were getting more technical

Also, I've tried 2.00 beta 7, version 1.03, hijack on 2.00 beta 7, will flashing the OS repeatedly cause glitches? Would it help to rebuild the disk?

Oh, yes. Very much.

The tuner only operates in-car, and is disabled in home mode.

Several users have had home-mode/car-mode problems, most often caused by a defective or damaged socket where the home adapter plugs into the player.

Re: Tuner help! - 04/02/2002 20:42

so does this mean I need to send it back? or will hijack in forced car mode make it work?

" I should also mention that my player seems to be stuck in home mode? Would that have anything to do with it? Could it be a faulty rio car player perhaps?"

Yes it would. To get some help, you have to give all the information you have. The tuner won't turn on unless it thinks its in the car. Youll mostly likely have to send it to the UK to have that power plug sensor fixed. You won't be without your player for long though. :-)

Ah, this would definitely be the cause of the trouble. Please see this FAQ entry which I will now update with the tuner information (it did not used to mention the tuner).

Re: Tuner help! - 05/02/2002 03:10

I think that forcing car (DC) mode through Hijack should work. Try it and let us know. Also, contact support about that faulty power connector.

Re: Tuner help! - 05/02/2002 07:27

Tried hijack in forced mode, didn't work I checked out the adaptor it doesn't look bent or smashed... it seems to be sticking up a fair amount. Would there be any other reason for the home mode issue other than the adaptor? I'm not looking forward to being without my player....

Re: Tuner help! - 05/02/2002 08:42

It's not the connector on the adaptor that would be a problem. It's the connector in the player itself. it's got a little tiny switch in there to tell when the adapter's been inserted. If the switch breaks, it thinks the adapter's in all the time.

More details in the FAQ

Re: Tuner help! - 05/02/2002 09:14

thats what I meant... the little piece of metal that touches the power adaptor itself as it slides into the rio.... that piece does not look damaged at all.... prior posts had stated if that piece of metal in the connector housing appeared flat, you crushed it, but if it wasn't all the way down you might have merely shorted it... but I'll just contact support and let them deal with it, I actually sent email yesterday about it. How long does it normally take them to respond?

Re: Tuner help! - 05/02/2002 13:46

Err.. that's not correct.

The Tuner module works perfectly fine in AC/Home mode.
That's where mine resides 100% of the time.

Did you have to do any fancy kernel tricks to make that work? Or does it work that way with the default kernel? And this is with the power connector in the AC power jack in the normal "home" fashion?

If it works that way, I have to go pull my additions to the FAQ.

Re: Tuner help! - 05/02/2002 16:05

Well, I have never tried it with a pre-v2.00beta kernel, but it has always worked with/without Hijack on the AC-plug. My Tuner has never been in the car. Ever.

Cheers

Re: Tuner help! - 05/02/2002 19:24

Ok then.... so basically your telling me that not only do I have a broken tuner, but I also have a faulty power connector to boot?

Re: Tuner help! - 05/02/2002 19:32

And by the way Terminator.... My tuner does come on and is even recognized by the rio unit... it even shows there is signal strength and finds all the local stations... just gives a low drone instead of sound. Just got word from tech support, they say that yes the tuner should work in home mode.... their paying for fedex to and from the UK, said it should only take about a week... hopefully by then I can get this frickin ground loop noise out of my car!

Re: Tuner help! - 05/02/2002 21:12

Are you fedexing the tuner back to them too? I thought the tuner stuff only loaded up when the player thinks its in car. Glad to hear they will get things all sorted out for you.

Re: Tuner help! - 06/02/2002 07:05

Yeah he told me to send the tuner and the head... I hope he doesn't ask for the sled too being that it's kind of hooked to my car

Re: Tuner help! - 13/02/2002 11:37

Got word from tech support today... No faulty power connector, actually a faulty diode... It''s fixed and heading back to me. The tuner was faulty, as was the replacement they had set aside for me , Hugo is outta the country right now but they hope when he returns he'll be able to repair one and send it back to me. If not they'll give a refund.
