access to the empeg over serial using a handspring - 04/02/2002 21:12

Does anyone know how to connect a handspring visor to the empeg? Do I need a null modem cable, or can I just use the handspring serial cradle directly to the empeg?

Thanks

There is a prog Called PalmEmpeg.

Visor is Palm OS compliant so here is the link :

That looks like a cool tool!

I saw in another thread that there was some success with getting a Palm to speak TCP/IP to the empeg via IR. After getting a TCP/IP link, has anyone tried to use PalmVNC to connect to the VNC server on the empeg? IIRC, the Palm's IR speed can do 115200 bps, right? The empeg's 128 x 32 screen has 4096 pixels, but at 2 bits each fits a whole screen into 1024 bytes (uncompressed). That means that without compression, the 8192 bits could be updated 14 times per second! Drop it down to 10fps to allow for some VNC, TCP & IP protocol overheads and it'd still be decent. With compression, you could get a higher frame rate, but the Palm may not be able to keep up with that.

Thoughts? Is the Palm fast enough to display visuals from the empeg?

But how in the heck is that serial connection supposed to get the the handheld? With undea USB connection I can understand, but not serial cable...

VNC cannot deal with color depths of less than 8bpp. And since I'm currently not doing any real form of compression(), it sends the full screen every time. So 128*32*8bits=32768b=4096B per frame. And 115200bps/32768bpf=3.5fps. Oh, well. Maybe I can get the compression working soon.

Still, 3.5 should be plenty for seeing the menus and info.... visuals wouldn't be very useful.

So that might be an option for people without a place to put the empeg.... install it in the trunk and run an IR relay to the dash. Just point the Palm at the dash and you're set.

Woohoo! Just got VNC running. That is sweet. I really appreciate your tackling this.

For now, I'm just running viewer from a PC over ethernet. Next stop, though, is VNC viewer from Zaurus, and then VNC from Zaurus over 802.11. Yes, I guess at some point compression couldn't hurt whether on serial or not, but I just wanted to say thanks for what you've done already.
