Serial Connection - 12/02/2002 04:38

My machine seems to be unable to open a com port to use with the rio car player. I have tried everything I can think of, but still no go. I am running Windows 98se. Does anybody have any suggestions? (I removed the modem and tried using that port, and I have all the setting set as recommended.)

Have you checked to make sure the COM port is enabled in the BIOS?

What does the Device Manager say about the COM port? Do you get a Little Yellow Boo Boo Icon?

Do you get a Little Yellow Boo Boo Icon?

There we go with the technical terms again. How are we going to be able to help any of the new users if we keep using this jargon?

It is enabled, and there are no boo-boos anywhere. Port settings are 115200 bps, 8 data bits, parity none, stop bits 1, and flow control none. When using HyperTerminal, it says, "Unable to open COM1" (or 2, or 3, ...). This one has me stumpped.

Do you have another piece of software that is grabbing the COM port? Perhaps a PalmSync utility running?

Edit: I just noticed that the Hyperterminal FAQ entry doesn't mention PalmSync. OOPS! Updating that now...

You haven't got anything like HotSync hogging the port have you?

Perhaps a PalmSync utility running?

That thing is always hogging the com port on mine.
