Audible click when changing tracks!

Audible click when changing tracks! - 03/03/2002 11:06

This happens when I use test tones. I recently made 99 .wav tones (5 frequencies per octave) and am frustrated that the preamp can't attenuate upon changing to the next tone. These sine waves are at normalized amplitude. What I think is happening is the amplitude is not zero when stopping one track, so a click occurs. Why the second click occurs for the beginning of the next track, I don't know (my samples are at zero on start). The pre amps seem to be wide open. On CD players, the audio preamp turns off between changing and unmutes when the track starts.

Any ideas on fixing this???

In your wave editing software, when you created the test tone, in the "save" screen, was there an extra check box that you checked?

The check box would have said something like "Save extra non-audio information", or "Append track details to file", or something like that.

This would append a piece of ASCII text data to the end of the file, which, when processed by a piece of wave playback software or an MP3 encoder, would cause a click.

The solution is to create the file without the extra appended data.

Good guess - I forgot to take note of that stuff when I save my work, but no, by default, that "non-audio information" box is not checked and none of the files I saved has that stuff...

I am assuming you are referring to Cool Edit Pro, which I used for these test tones. Can't figure it out... anyone else made test tones with no clicks?

.wav files have a data structure in the file header. This will be causing the click. Save your file as .pcm (raw data).

If the "raw PCM" option that was suggested by PeterK doesn't work, try this:

Try making sure that the file starts and stops at a zero-crossing. In CoolEdit, they even have a keystroke to make sure your selected range ends fall on zero-crossings. Select the entire wave, press that key, then save only your selection.

Zero-crossing snap is a standard thing to use all the time when editing audio files to prevent clicks at edit points.

Did you get this sorted?
