Bad Hard Drive Cable comment - 10/03/2002 20:32

Just A thought ,with all the people posting about their player not booting, freezing at boot up,etc.(including me).All of these problems are 90%? related to the bad crimps on the hard drive cables.Someone must know what bad batch of cables got put into which serialed numbered players and should have just sent out new cables with the player. It would have saved alot of worrying, fear, anger about the player not working and maybe even eliminated quite a few posts.Quote from Rob at empeg We did get a batch of dodgy hard drive cables (it's a shame we already stopped using the supplier, otherwise we would stop using them!). Don't get me wrong ,I love my player but it could have saved alot of frustrating after purchase moments.

Apologies if I've missed this before; Is it the MK2 or MK2A or both models that possibly have the bad cable?

Not got any problems myself, just curious.

This problem theoretically can show up on any hard disk cable in any computer device ever made, so your particular model of player shouldn't rule out cable problems completely.

However...

The specific "known trouble" with cables and the particular bad batch will tend to manifest itself only on 2A model shipments.

Noone has answered the original question yet. And it's one I've been running in my head lately. I haven't seen any problems that would indicate a bad cable yet, but I wonder if mine could be from the bad batch. Doesn't empeg have some kind of record of which serial numbers received cables from the bad batch? If so, I'd like to know since I'll probably be cracking open my player in the near future to add a second drive and I would like to replace the cable at that time if it is a bad one. Is it possible to tell if the cable is bad by looking at it? Any special markings?
