Riocar not turning off with ignition.

Riocar not turning off with ignition. - 22/05/2002 11:24

I'm continuing this from this Wish List thread because I think it fits better here.

The issue is when I turn off my car, '97 Honda Accord, the Riocar always continues to play for approximately 30 seconds. As suggested I checked the wiring, and I did not "wire by color " and I used proper adapters and connect it directly to the factory wiring harness in the dash. I have the factory AM/FM cassette sharing the power, dimmer and ignition wires. The front outputs are wired to a signal degrader then into the Aux in on the Riocar. From there it goes to the amp then back to the wire harness in the dash to the speakers.

So today, being the first day I could play with it, I noticed that when the factory head was either unplugged or turned on when I turned off the car the Riocar turns off right away. If the factory head is off and I turn off the car is when it stays on, but if I turn on the factory head within the 30 seconds, the Riocar powers off in less than a second.

I think that this is just the factory head keeping a charge and releasing it into the system if it has not used it. My question is does anyone think this will be harmful to my Riocar or anything else in the car? (Listed in priority of course ) If so would there be a simply way to fix it or would I basically have to build a circuit to keep it from discharging into the car.

Sounds like something is wired to one of the amp remote lines which shouldn't be.

There's only one amp remote line that I know of from the Riocar and that is only wired to the remote on the amp. There is however an internal amp on the factory head unit?

This is *slightly* off thread but not off topic :-) :
I noticed that when the volume slider is visible on screen, my empeg does not turn off with ignition. Probably a bug?

I had behavior like this (player stayed on for up to 5 minutes after key off) in my car. It was *not* a wiring fault. It was with 2.0b11 and an earlier Hijack. I haven't expereienced this in a while. My only changes: Hijack upgrades.

OK, I've installed the latest version of hijack. I will test sometime today and let you know if that changed anything.

Tested it 3 times so far, same thing. I've triple checked the wiring and can't find anything that looks wrong. The only thing that makes sense to me is that the factory head unit is building a charge while the car is on and releasing it into the empeg when the ignition is turned off. Tell me if this sounds absolutely crazy please.

I've noticed something similar when upgrading Hijack versions a few times. The player would, upon being pulgged into the car, go immediately into suspend (heart-beat mode) and there would be no way to wake it up without pulling the player out and re-inserting it (rebooting.) This happened regardless of whether the car was on or off. It still worked fine on AC power though.

The fix was to re-load the original 2.0b11 software and then reapply the newer Hijack kernel on top of that. Fixed it every time.

Hope this helps.

Would that be a complete 2.0b11 upgrade (applying the .upgrade file) or just flashing the stock, non-hijack, 2.0b11 kernel back on?

I just used the .upgrade file like you said (using the upgrade option from emplode.)

Re: Riocar not turning off with ignition. - 27/05/2002 10:29

Well I had already downgraded to 1.03 and then back to 2.0 beta 11 once to fix anouther problem. Though this did fix the current problem (time resetting) it had no affect on the shutdown problem.

Anyways its not going to matter anymore. I'm splitting up with my wife and shes keeping the car, so I'm taking it out tonight. When I get a car to put it in I am definitely taking out the head unit.

Try taking the empeg out of turbo mode. When it gets hot, it goes into an over-run mode to keep oil going through the gears while it cools down. This stops machinery cracking under heat stress.

but seriously

can you put a suitable diode in line with the other head unit's ignition line? It might stop any discharge flowing back to the empeg. Maybe there is a capacitor in your head unit on that input line, which is discharging and keeping the empeg alive?

I'm getting the same problem. I turn off my ignition and the player goes into "the rest mode", but if I press play it comes alive again---with the ignition off. I checked the conection at the ignition wire and it reads 0 volts, but the player still plays? This may also be related to a problem I'm having with the unit shuting off when I hit the brakes. Sounds like a factory defect to me. The only reasion I say this is because I know I'm not the only one here who has this problem. Plus this also sounds like a hardware problem.

The mk2, if wired correctly, is supposed to come back on if you press play again.

It's supposed to do THAT. Please click here.

I've noticed the same thing, but I thought it was designed that way? (I'm pretty sure I read something in the FAQ about people wanting to set up wireless ethernet with their Empeg Car so they could copy new songs down to it from the house while the car and player were out in the driveway/garage. It pointed out that the timeout before the player shuts off would need to be modified, because otherwise, you'd only have a short time to copy your files to it once the car was turned off.)

I just got my unit installed 2 days ago though, so I'm really not sure how it's "supposed to work" yet.

Re: Riocar not turning off with ignition. - 01/06/2002 10:22

OK, I've not seen this turbo mode, where is it? But as far as it being a heat issue I can turn it on for less than a minute and shut the car off and it will still stay on for the almost the same amount of time as if I just got back from an hour drive. I would think if it was heat it would last longer if it was hotter.

The capacitor is what I've been thinking, but I won't have a chance to test it as my soon-to-be-x is keeping the car.

OK, got my new car. A sweet little 2002 Mitsu Eclipse Spyder, totally awesome! Anyways, I've installed my Riocar and it is shutting off with the ignition with no problem now. Just had a hard time finding the wire diagram for connector under the seat. I'll get a picture up soon, it really looks good in this car.

My Mk2a 2b11 sometimes reboots when I turn on the parking lights. But only once, subsequent headlight switch toggles result in no interuption of play. This is with the engine off, and so may be due to a temporary low batt condition?

Re: Riocar not turning off with ignition. - 18/07/2002 21:45

With the engine off, my car sometimes triggers a reboot/battery-icon because its highest available voltage is only 12v at that time so anything else I do (lights on, big bass hit from the subwoofer, turn on the fan, etc.) will drop the voltage down from there.

With the engine running (and therefore the alternator charging), the car's voltage is up to 14v as a baseline, giving that much more buffer space, plus the alternator is constantly charging the system.
