Mark l Drive Upgrade

Mark l Drive Upgrade - 07/06/2002 14:58

I am in the midst of doing a second drive install on my MKl. Any pointers on getting the drive cradle back in? Been at it for an hour now and just can't get it back in right. I had the drive upgrade FAQ up while doing it and had no problems until this point. Crap!

For me, it was a question of deliberately bending and kinking the IDE cables different ways until they did what I wanted them to do.

The only thing you have to be careful of is that riser board in the back, don't put undue pressure on that riser board.

I finally got all the screws back in the sides. I'll put the top on and find out if I screwed up the display board or not. Very nerve racking for the first time

After all that work it doesn't find any drives. Back at it I guess, I was very careful putting the cables on making sure the pins were correct.

Check to make sure the drives are found while they're still outside the case and loosely tethered. Did you format them both? Did you install the player software onto both?

Re: Mark l Drive Upgrade - 07/06/2002 15:33

Connect up the serial port and see if the Linux kernel can "see" the drives .. it will print something like this:

Partition check:
hda: hda1 < hda5 hda6 > hda2 hda3 hda4
hdc: hdc1 < hdc5 hdc6 > hdc2 hdc3 hdc4

There should be a line for each of "hda:" and "hdc:". The rest of the stuff on the lines will be bogus until you install the empeg software.

I just booted it up and Hyperterminal finds both drives but Emplode does not see the player. I thought that the second drive had the software already installed, according to the buyer it did. Would Emplode not find it if it didn't?

I thought that the second drive had the software already installed, according to the buyer it did.

Software is different between Mk1 and Mk2 players. Mk2 software on a Mk1 player is a no-no. Also, software version must match the emplode version, Emplode 1.03 against player 2.0b11 is a no-no.

Dunno if that's the reason, just a stab.

I'll try loading it and seeing what happens. He installed the software for the MKl using a MKll. Maybe that is why.

Do the whole disk-formatter thingy from scratch, per the instructions on the upgrade page.

Re: Mark l Drive Upgrade - 07/06/2002 16:04

That all looks good, the player software is even installed and running, though perhaps for the wrong model.

I would just try installing the beta11 upgrade over the serial link.

Too late. I'm doing the whole disk builder thing from scratch. I'll see what happens when it is done. Been fun so far
