Sub Suggestions - 29/10/2000 22:26

Hey all, I thought someone here might have some useful thoughts on small subs.

I have a jeep wrangler and I am sick of having the limited storage space used by a bass tube (which sounds bad anyway) so I have decided to build a custom box that fits under the back seat. So I did the math and measurements and determined that I can create one (sealed) box split into two compartments each of which is about 0.4 cubic feet with a depth of about 4 inches. So... unfortunately this limits me to a pair of 8 inch subs. I have been trying to figure a way to fit 10s, but I can't without fairly major modifications to the back seat.

Anyway, I was hoping someone here has experience with 8 inch subs. I don't want to piss off the neighbors or anything, but I do want to hear all of my music (mainstream rock, alternative, some techno) and jeeps are loud and poorly insulated. I am looking at the MTX 6000 and JLAudio 8W1. Anybody used either of these? Any thoughts on them? Do you think I would be happy with this small of a speaker? Any other suggestions? I would like to keep the total for speakers and amp around $500.

Thanks,
-Mike

Sounds like you're on the right track. Two good 8-inch subs in sealed boxes will probably sound a lot better than that bass tube.

You can get some poly-fill stuffing from Crutchfield that will allow the boxes to perform a little better (as if the boxes were larger than they really are). Also, I think they sell books on speaker-box-building that would be helpful.

Yeah, I was already planning on doing the polyfill thing and I have built a few simple boxes so I don't really think I need a book, but I do need some advice on the speakers as I am used to dealing with 10s or 12s.

I am a pretty big car stereo buff (why else would I own a empeg.. other than its F'ing cool) and like most other people that start out in car stereo they want BASS... and highs come second... but anyways to the point. I was at my local car stereo shop picking up a capasitor and they were testing a ford ranger in the first bay, and it was hitting HARD.. and I went and looked at it and my jaw dropped when I saw a pair of JL 8w1 microsubs which come in their own box supplied JL.. although they were running on PPI (the only way to go) amp, they were unreal for 8 inch subs.. if you are going to get 8" I would not choose anything but the microsubs from JL.

I have two of those JL 8" subs myself.
I like them, but I think I have abit too large case, because they play
extremely low.

Speaking of JL Audio, they've got some really good pre-built custom boxes called "stealthboxes", made for fitting in cars like if they were factory-designed. Check for the Wrangler-specific stealthbox, it may be what you are lookng for.

Well, if anyone is interested, I ended up going with a set of JLAudio 8W0s. They sound pretty good and it is nice to have the whole enclosure under the rear seat (man that was a tight fit). Now I just need a dedicated amp to drive them, they are currently running off the rear channels of my main amp which is not really powerful enough. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
