What a nifty idea. Although I couldn't find any pics of it on that web site (it seems all they have is a patent for the idea at this time), it's a great concept. A miniature MP3 player the shape of an audio cassete that you insert into a casette player to use. I guess they'd have speed sensors on the little holes so that they can tell whether it's in stop/play/ff/rew mode.

Still, I like having the Empeg's kind of storage. I can't ever see owning one of the small ones. One day, they'll get storage technology small enough to do that kind of thing with gigs instead of megs.

There were several of these at C.E.S - cute, but I can't think of any practical value. The very limited capacity demands low bitrates, and the magnetic interface restricts the audio to a cassette response envelope.

I daresay the quality will be a little better than a regular cassette, but I think I would go for a C90 cassette and spend the money I save on some CD's to copy onto it.

I agree with Rob's analysis, but for anyone who still wants one, try looking here.

I'm pretty much in agreement with this - it is basically a Geekbone, but -

- I remember how surprised I was at the quality of playback when I got a cassette playback adaptor for my portable CD player to allow me to use it in any of our cars (this was prior to the empeg, of course). I don't know whether it was just the signal level from the player driving the head, but I felt that I was getting quite excellent playback (better than I expected, anyway).

A mockup is shown on the "hardware" page.

Actually, before I got an in-dash CD player, I used a cassette adapter tied to a portable CD player. It sounded _significantly_ better than a cassette tape. I'm not saying the sound was as nice as the setup I have now, but it will satisfy a lot of people.

Still, with only 32MB capacity this Rome player is pretty much worthless.
