Check this out! Full resolution touch screen in-car player. Not very cost effective, but you have to admire the work that went into this... Sorry if this old news.. I just found it.

Probably long enough to switch it on, drive to the supermarket, do your weekly shop and drive home before you get to the desktop

Actually you can get a win 98se install to boot in around 10 seconds, with MINIMAL drivers. Suspend to disk and reboot from disc might also be required (I've got a friend who wanted an empeg but for similar prices he is working toward a "carputer").

Keep in mind that the empeg takes around 15 seconds...

I dunno about you my empeg never takes more than 7 secs to boot.

I would be very interested in hearing details about your 7 second empeg!

When I first got my empeg, back in the 1.0 software (and earlier than that!) days, it would boot in 8 seconds. As I got more and more music, and later and later software, boot times got longer and longer, until now it takes 15 seconds to boot.

Mine is a single drive (18 GB) player with no third party software: 2.0b13 is the only thing on it, plus 1623 songs/audiobooks/etc with a total play time of 378 hours. (170 hours of audio books, most of them recorded at ridiculously low bitrates)

What boot times to other people get, and if less than the (apparently) normal 15 seconds, how did you achieve it?

I thought you knew this, Doug:

The first thing that would improve your boot times is a second disk drive. The reason it takes so long is that it's searching for second disk drive and giving it a chance to spin up. If you actually got a second disk drive, the player would simply find it and quit waiting.

...and if you installed hijack then you'd have the option to disable the 2nd drive search

If you have only one drive, you could install HiJack and select the single drive select option which reduces the timeout on 2nd drive detection and allows for a faster boot.
