Anyone know where to buy items outside the US? - 12/07/2002 13:47

In particular, Alpine items? I'm interested in a Japanese double-din Alpine. An online store that exports would be sweet. Thanks for any info.

You may want to check out These guys. They say they will sell any Japanese electronics for price + 5%.

I also hear good things about this company. However, I have never used either of them. If I need somthing from another country, I usually wait until I know someone who is going there.

Thanks guys. pricejapan is exactly what I was looking for. They sent me pricing for the Alpine unit I was looking for, including customs of $1024, which, for that double-din unit isn't really all that bad. Especially for the bragging right which would be my undoubtedly being one of the only people in my area that would have one.

Just checking: you're aware that Japan uses totally different FM frequencies and hence the tuner won't work in the US?

There are "band expander" boxes available, whch are used a lot in the UK when people import japanese performance cars (as they're right hand drive, see...) which does a frequency shift - however, the display will be wrong and the reception usually takes a hit.

I thought the frequency was just shifted down slightly, so you would loose stations right at the top of the dial. You would however, be able to listen to the odd conversation on RT at the bottom end of the frequencies.

There is an overlap, but it's small. ISTR it's something like 76-90MHz, so you get 88-90 for free but you loose rather a lot of the rest of the band - you could classify anything above 90Mhz as "the top", I suppose

Well if you like Radio 2 then there isn't a problem! Seriously, I didn't realise the overlap was that small, I thought it was only transposed by a few meg.
