Hijack v301

Hijack v301 - 15/12/2002 08:05

Hijack v301 is now available.

This version now includes v4 of the audio overlay patch.

The patchfile for v301 (and subsequent versions) is now taken relative to v300, so if you're patching a virgin Empeg kernel source tree, you will need to first install the v300 patch, and then apply v301 on top of it. This method reduces the v301 (and subsequent) patches by about 17MB.

Hey Mark, there's one thing I couldn't figure out that maybe you'll have better luck with. Kim's patch brings the volume of the MP3 down and mixes it with the PCM sound using some assembly code in the audio_mix() function. The thing is, after mixing, the resulting volume is pretty soft, because it's a 50/50 mix. Any way you could take a quick look at the assembly code and figure out some way of amplifying the PCM sound (the one that the user app is playing) so that it's a little louder? I'm not nearly gifted enough in assembly. He already has code to scale the MP3 sound down. I was thinking maybe the same approach could be used to scale the PCM sound up, but I wasn't able to get it done.

Just another item for the work queue...

I won't be looking into that, sorry. Too much else on the plate, and I doubt that I will ever actually use that feature on my own empegs.

Ok, fair enough.

Re: Hijack v301 - 15/12/2002 15:12

I'll look at that a bit more in the New Year - I had hoped to do it before Christmas, but the shopping got in the way. I'll be far too busy in the UK for the next couple of weeks, spending some quality time in the pub, (ok... and some with my family too), and besides which, I won't have the empeg with me.

Merry Christmas.

Re: Hijack v301 - 17/12/2002 03:25

I have a quick question. I just installed the v301.hijack.v200b13.mk2.zImage and when it boots, the empeg says that it is kernel v200b11. Is that a typo or something?

Thanks for all your hard work!

Re: Hijack v301 - 17/12/2002 05:08

I guess it is not a typo.
AFAIR, the kernel did not change between beta 11 and beta 13.

Re: Hijack v301 - 17/12/2002 07:14

Where exactly does it print the message? You could be running the v2.00b11 player software with a v2.00b13 Hijack kernel...

There were some changes to the kernel from b11 to b13. It was a fix to the flash driver, change to the knob code and a fix for the lockups.

>the empeg says that it is kernel v200b11.

No, it does not say that. That string does not appear anywhere in the Hijack kernel, so it therefore cannot be displayed.

What makes you think otherwise?

Re: Hijack v301 - 17/12/2002 08:31

When the empeg boots up, it displays the Hijack splash screen. After the splash screen, it shows the regular empeg boot screen, at the top left, it says: empeg car, below that, the kernel version (version 2.00-beta11), then the player name below that.

It was version 2.00-beta13 with Hijack 291. I just applied the Hijack 301 using (what I thought was) the full kernel upgrade. Thats when it reverted to b11.

Did I grab the wrong image?

Re: Hijack v301 - 17/12/2002 08:44

Hate to tell you, but that's the player software version, not the kernel version. Looks like you're still running v2.0b11.

Re: Hijack v301 - 17/12/2002 11:46

OK. So that is the player version and not the kernel version?

I'm going to try installing the file v301.hijack.v200b13.mk2.zImage on the empeg I brought in to work and see what happens.

Right now it is currently running Hijack 291, and the boot screen (as well as the 'About' screen) both show 2.00-beta13. I'm going to see if this file is going to revert it back to v11.

I'll let you know what happens.

Re: Hijack v301 - 17/12/2002 12:57

This one is still at b13 after applying Hijack 301. I'll have to take a look at my other player when I get home and see what happened (maybe, I have a final tonight and there is a good possibility I will forget everything except to drink heavily afterwards).

Re: Hijack v301 - 17/12/2002 13:01

The *.zImage files are just the kernel. It won't upgrade the player software. You need to get the upgrade from the Empeg site and then run the upgrade program to get everything uptodate. Be warned that it will overwrite the current kernel with the stock one.

A compiled version of hj 301 with ext3 filesystem support enabled in available from my ext3 site if anybody needs it.

Umm... I feel really stupid here... But, i am trying to update to 301 and it won't let me do it. What files do I need (Exactly) and how do i do the 'conversion?' to ext3?

I am running V2.00 B13 (on the player boot up screen) and currently have HiJack V292 installed.

Thanks everyone.

What do you mean by "it won't let me"? What exactly are you trying to do and what errors/behavior are you seeing? Are you trying to update with the version of hijack linked from my ext3 page or the regular hijack from Mark Lord's page? Once you get 301 on there read through the directions on the page I linked for the ext3 conversion instructions and let me know if you have problems.

Oh, and if you don't understand the instructions on that page you may want to read through the parts of this thread that discuss ext3 and consider if there are any good reasons for you to be running ext3 at this point. The main reasons from my POV would be that you are: 1. doing development, 2. have really large drives in your empeg, 3. do very regular syncs, 4. like to play with what ever is new and have enough knowledge of unix/ext3 to get out of any problems you may get into, 5. have a spare empeg to play with and don't mind running the drive builder to completely rebuild it if something goes wrong. There are some good discussions and alternate viewpoints in that thread.

Hey Mark, if you get a chance would you mind throwing a link somewhere on the hijack page to my ext3 page? Even just in the changelog where you mention ext3 would be great. I have noticed a few people that read that and didn't get that ext3 isn't enabled in your builds.

Mirror updated at www.empeg-hijack.com if anyone cares.

EDIT: refreshed to reflect ext3 change.

Okay, done. But could you please add a Title to your page, and a note somewhere pointing out that it's not my page (so I don't get emails with questions about it)?

Thanks

I just converted to ext3. It was a breeze. Nice documentation mcomb. I even rwm'd and pulled power...came back up as if nothing had happened!

Re: Hijack v301 - 19/12/2002 13:17

Hm. Are you sure that .zimage file is a good file?

Where is the file stored? It should be on a local disk drive not on a network share.

What software are you using to upload it? Is it the latest Logo Editor program?

Try this, try using the latest Logo Editor, and open an Explorer window with that file. Then drag and drop that file onto the Logo Editor window. See if that works.

Re: Hijack v301 - 19/12/2002 13:25

Ok.. I just read the first message in this thread and I have a question now. I had 2.00beta13 with Hijack 296 installed. I just recently upgraded my hijack to 301. Am I up to date? Or do I need to update it to v300 (17 meg patch) and then to 301? If I need to do the latter, could someone tell me how to do it? Thanks.

Re: Hijack v301 - 19/12/2002 13:27

Thanks Tony,

I was using the upload.exe file to do it.

The zImage file was D/L from the HiJack site.

And.. where is the latest Logo Editor Program found?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Hijack v301 - 19/12/2002 13:51

I was using the upload.exe file to do it.

Okay, you should probably use the logo editor program's main menu or the procedure I described. Not upload.exe "manually".

And.. where is the latest Logo Editor Program found?

Both at Riocar.org as well as my personal web site (click on my name below).

You don't need that patch unless you are a programmer and want the source code. If you are just a regular user all you need is the .zimage file with the highest version number (v301 currently).
