critical hijack patch - 21/10/2003 00:36

Probably not in the sense you were thinking, but it is a hijack patch, and I am being critical

Seriously, though, I should write the code to let the player (think it) receives commands from it even when apps have it, already.

just to jump on the bandwagon, i believe your apostrophes are inconsistent

Whose? There was exactly one in that message, and it wasn't mine: the patch removed it.

Hmm. I was under the impression that an apostrophe should be used when a word is abbrev'd.

The MLA says you're wrong.

Abbreviations, like App' would be ok, but:

"PLURALS OF NUMBERS, LETTERS, SYMBOLS, ABBREVIATIONS
"
...

"The Modern Language Association also recommends omitting the apostrophe with abbreviations: 4.0s, DC-3s . "

I can find other references, this was just the first hit from Google.

The rule you're thinking of is one of these two:

Excised letters get replaced with apostrophes: don't, bo'sun

Pluralized acronyms can get apostrophes, especially when it gets confusing as to whether the `s' is part of the acronym: CPU's, CRT's

I suppose you could make the case that it fits the first of those, but, I think, in our jargon, ``app'' is no longer an abbreviation. I don't think it really quite fits the connotation of that rule anyway. I think it has more to do with transcribed oral elisions.
