C64 nostalgia on empeg!

Are you missing your favorite C64 tunes?

I found a rather easily portable libsidplay package for Debian which I managed to get to work with empeg and now you can turn your empeg Mk1/Mk2 into a C64 SID emulator!

I built a very simple UI for sidplay to allow playing multiple sid files and controlling the volume. You can download it from here. Note, this is only a temporary location, hopefully Verement will add it to the developer's site soon.

The package contains one executable which is the sid player with one embedded example tune. Copying .sid files into the same directory with the executable allows you to have multiple sid files on the play list. The purpose of this is just to provide a very simple way of playing those C64 SID files and therefore the UI only contains the very minimum set of controls.

Amazingly, the sound quality in some of those tunes is really good. As the sound samples are generated on-the-fly they are 44KHz 16-bit and therefore sound much better than 10+ years ago on original C64.

If you get kicks out of listening old C64 tunes, there are more than 10000 tunes available for free in various web sites and SID file collections.

Enjoy!

What nostaligia! Scary and cool, all at the same time.

I always say "Everything I need to know about programming, I learned on the C-64".

I'll still never forget the day that I grasped the concept of indirect indexed addressing in 6502 assembler. I was about 15 years old, and was having to ask someone younger than me about assembly-language coding... how embarassing (some things never change). He had to explain it to me about five times before I got it.

After that, his family screened their telephone calls, and I didn't get much of a chance to talk to him...

Anyway, cool beans on the SID emulator for the Empeg. Sounds like something that'd be pretty easy to incorporate into the main player software, too. That'd be hilarious: "Supports MP3, MP2, WAV, WMA, and SID"...

Not sure if it'll do any good, but i've got a chunk of code that reads the database. As for the rest ...

I found a freeware linux mod player (libmikMOD-3.1.9), which cross compiled ok, but it requires floating point at the moment, and I'm not good enough at c coding to play with it further... (i.e. it worked after I changed the output buffer size to match the empeg, and it played for a couple seconds, then the sound stuttered lots...)

Anyone with c skills want to take this further?

With the current screen on the empeg, a gameboy emulator might be more likely... =)

Yeah.. =)

I mean there are arm ports of Mame and Mess available (under RISC OS, maybe arm linux too?) so they could be a possibility (although you'll have to modify the screen display parts and memory might be a bit tight)...

Then someone will come up with a joystick to serial adaptor, and we'll be away... =)

Nah... just wire up the steering wheel to use as a joystick... no, wait a minute...

That's a good idea... If the empeg is connected to the steering wheel, it can drive whilst we are busy playing pole position... =)

Once had a MK3 Escort XR3i. (I still miss that car a bit, even though it was a Ford).
