Different Remotes?

Different Remotes? - 11/09/2000 15:20

I want to use a different remote. An Alpine for example. I have a Alpine CVA-1005 in the dash just above the Empeg. It would be so nice to use the Alpine Remote. It has a button on the side to switch the remote to use the Alpine NAV unit. I want to program the Empeg to use these commands. Either in addition to the Kenwood or replacing the Kenwood remote.

Where can I get started? Has someone already done this? It shouldn't be that hard. I guess I just need to know where to start.

Look here
I've got the source on the empeg right now nad not in reach, but will post the source later...

Kinda new at all this. So when you post can you throw in some how-to. I assume I need the developer image so I will go ahead and get that loaded.

What Frank mentioned is the right way to do it but the other way you could do it is to program a microcontroller to "listen" for the IR signal and send the appropriate serial command to the serial port. I have that same alpine remote and was thinking about doing that. I could try to make it universal if anybody else had a use for it but I'm not sure how involved that would be.

Actually, is there a way that the IR command set can be backed out into an ini file? That way, it could be adjusted
to whatever remote was available. Perhaps a new feature for 1.1?

That would be a good idea for Empeg. Place the remote code data in a file that can be edited by us. They need only put their remote codes there. We can substitue the codes we need. That would be totally customizable that way. Empeg doesn't have to take time out, after that is in there, to program for every joe that wants to use this or that remote. Maybe even allowing 2 or 3 commands per function, you could have two remotes that way. The original would always work and the one you want.

It would be a lot easier to ask the message board for codes for this remote than to try and reprogram the kernal, when most of us don't have a clue. I speak for myself on that one.

A cheap and easy way to find the remote codes for a remote (if you have a Pilot) is to use OmniRemote and ORDesktop. You can program any remote control on the pilot using this, and I know that using ORDesktop you can see what those codes are.

The kernel driver only supports RC5 remotes and even then only ones that exhibit certain properties in the manufacturer bits. Not all remotes will even be recognised by the kernel so hackery may be required anyway.

Making the codes customisable among compatible remotes is not completely straightforward but it may happen.
