disable shell/player serial access

I am hooking a GPS to the availble serial port of my MK2 on AC power. While telneted in via ethernet I am trying to read and write data to ttyS1 however because either the player or the shell are using the port I am unable to access it. How do I do this without a custom init? Sorry if this is a duplicate question.
