DSP Questions ... - 09/06/1999 02:13

Hi there !
I've got some questions concerning the DSP Functions of the empeg:

-1- The 2x 10 Band EQ, does it use 1 Band for Left and 1 Band for Right,
or does it use 1 Band for Front and 1 for Rear, or can you choose ?

-2- If the EQ does not use Front and Rear (which i fear), is there ANY other
way of reducing Subsonics and Basses for the front speakers, as i ( and
many people i know ) really need this.
If this is not implemented in any way, will it be implemented ?

-3- If non of the above works, will there be a SDK to implement this by myself
( thinking that there IS code to use the EQ somehow, it should be easy to
recode it to my will )

Thank you for your help, this is something i am really concerned about to protect my valuable front speakers, which are simply not meant to pruduce basses ( this is what my 2 35 cm Pyle Subs in the back are for :)

For question 2, I do the same thing with an active crossover.

I have 2 stereos, the crossover, a 4 channel amp, 4 main speakers and a 15 inch sub.
The tape car stereo (to be replace with the empeg) goes into the line input on the combined MD/CD player.. This feeds the crossover with the bass going into the rear channels on the amp (bridged to produce about 120 watts rms) and the treble going into the front channels (running the 4 speakers in a 2 ohm configuration at about 72 watts a channel rms).. I loose front rear fade by running the main speakers at 2 ohms, but I save myself an Amp.. =)

Obviously in your case filtering in the empeg will save you the cost of a crossover, but this is a way to achive it...
You are right to worry about your front speakers.. My friend has blown 4 sets of front speakers by not crossing them over properly..

According to the empeg web site: "It also gives a separate 5-band equaliser for each of the four channels," not 2 10 band equalisers. Unless they've changed this spec without updating the web site, sounds like this should help your problem?

Instead of buying a heavy-duty crossover you could just install small chokes on the front speakers that eliminate all freqs below 80, or 120, or whatever you want the cutoff to be. These are only a few dollars and are a simple way to crossover in a non-dynamic enviroment, where you do not need to adjust the freqs at all. Talk to your installer about getting these installed, it should only take 15 minutes to install on both front speakers.

Hi sheetzam ..

Yes it is in the specs, but when i asked them about this, they told me that it is not implemented at all and that it will only be delivered with a 2 band EQ, but they said that there is the possibility that this will be fixed in the future, whatever ( and whenever ) this means :(

Yes, that will stop the front speakers popping, but it will allow full range into the subs (unless you have an amp with a lowpass filter on it)

Full range into subs sounds awful.. =)

Yes....and no.

The DSP has 4x5 band parametric EQ. You can chain two 5's and end up with a pair of 10-bands (left/right). As programming the DSP is a pain, and the docs to do so are not freely available (we had to sign NDAs, unfortunately) the first release will probably only have 2x10 support. Still, 4x5 just requires that we have more time to add stuff to the code - it'll happen if there's demand, the hardware is capable.

Why would you want L&R separate EQs? Wouldn't you want the separate EQs to be front and back?

Unfortunately the use of left and right rather than front and rear is part of the DSP design and out of our control.

Wait a second ...
I thought altman ( Hugo ) said that the DSP CAN use the EQ for front and back, but that its just not implemented ...

btw. : CHIP, you are right, different EQ settings for left and right really dont make sense, where front and back DO make sense ...

Umm, yes. I wasn't really very clear, was I? :-)

What I meant was that when the equaliser is in two channel mode it is limited to left and right. When it is in four channel mode then the equalisation can be set separately, although this halves the number of bands for each channel.

I hope that's a bit better.

Ahh !
Okay, so thats good news again ...
And -> IS this actually implemented or not ?
( If NO; IS IT GOING TO BE IMPLEMENTED AND WHEN ? :)
