Hijack 185: Root playlist doesn't play?

Hijack 185: Root playlist doesn't play? - 07/02/2002 01:32

I remember that several hijack versions ago, this worked, and now it doesn't. I don't know why:

When I connect to the hijack's streamer screen with:

http://empeg/drive0/fids/101?.html

it gives me a table with all my playlists. At the top-left corner of this table is a "Play" link (which used to say "Play All" in older versions of Hijack). This link points to:

http://empeg/drive0/fids/101?.m3u

When I click on this link, nothing happens. Well, the player churns, but Winamp does not launch and the IE globe eventually stops throbbing. In the past, when I did this, it actually launched winamp and played the entire player contents. If I happen to copy that link to the clipboard and paste it into WinAmp's "Open Location" box, it works fine.

If I choose one of the "Play" links for a specifc playlist, for example:

http://empeg/drive0/fids/6d81?.m3u

That happens to work just fine. So why would http://empeg/drive0/fids/101?.m3u fail while http://empeg/drive0/fids/6d81?.m3u works? And why would http://empeg/drive0/fids/101?.m3u fail on a click but work when I paste it into WinAmp?

(know this isn't helpful, but) I just flashed up to 185 and I am unable to reproduce what you've described, Tony.

I am wondering if this is an additional symptom of the strange garbage-named filesystem entries you were/are seeing. If it was related, I'd expect some of your other subordinate playlists to exhibit the same strange behaviour as well.

If you download the top-level .m3u and view it in a text editor, is there anything odd in there?

Me too. but I have some other problems in nearby thread which may impact it.

Perhaps a browser limitation?

Try again with Netscape Communicator, Konqueror, Mozilla, or Opera?

This must only be a problem for people named Tony, because I reported a variant of this problem here a couple days ago. The caveat is that there were other (non-root) playlists that didn't work, and I hadn't tried pasting the URL's directly into the WinAMP location dialog.

Well I just upgraded to v188 and my root playlist is a little too large to load entirely, but I can confirm that clicking the "Play" link at the top of the root playlist doesn't work, while cut-n-pasting the URL into WinAMP does (though it would take several minutes to load the m3u for all my songs.)

However I still have the same problem with some of my other playlists, especially the root ones. If I dig down deeper into my hierarchy, I can find playlists (my album playlists, for instance) which play fine when clicked in IE. All of the ones that don't play in IE play fine when I cut and paste the URL into WinAMP.

So something is definitely funky with IE. This is IE 6.0 under Windows 2000.

Hmm, maybe it's a timeout thing? If IE can't get the whole tomato within 30 seconds it times out?

My root plays fine with both IE 5.5 and 6.0 under 2K. 5946 entries get thrown into Winamp's playlist after a 470KB m3u download.

This was last tried with Hijack 182 I think. I have 185 installed right now and I suppose I could try it out in a couple of hours (perhaps try updating to 188 as well)

Okay then there must be something kooky about our playlists. No idea what that could be. Someone had said something about playlist details (genre, source, etc.) being filled in or not, but I didn't find any connection there. It's not such a big deal since cut and paste to WinAMP isn't that onerous, but it is an odd behavior, to be sure.

Hmm. Okay, worked fine for me this morning with v188 and IE6. I will try on IE5.5 again when I get home tonight.
