Event Notification

I thought I had seen this in a previous post, but I cannot find it....
Is there a way for my custom app to play a sound file (.mp3 I suppose) while the player/radio is outputting. I dont care whether the sound is mixed with the player output or overwrites it completely.

I want to write a background daemon that notifies the driver when "interesting" things happen.

I know Kim has this working with his Nav project. Do a search for "kim sound overlay" or something similar and see if you find anything.
