Pelican 1400 (Photos)

i went out and got my mittens on a pelican 1400 and i have to say that i was turned off a little by its size but it is one DURABLE case. it is very well made and i also bought a pelican combination lock to go with it. there is lots of room in there for goodies and such so i'd have to reccomend it to everyone that has an empeg. now i can carry my alpine detachable face, usb cable, ac adaptor, rio remote, and of course the empeg - all in one package! tré cool if you ask me. thanks to eveyone who reccomended it...i never would have even thought of looking for this type of case. in the end, it really isn't that big at all.

I wonder if there's a hardshell case that's almost exactly the same size as the player. Perhaps close to the size of the empeg-brand bag.

Pelican does make a case that is much closer to the size of the player, the 1200. It would provide a little less than an inch of foam protection all around. But it would be good for those of us who don't have extras to carry (like you, Tony). I'm thinking about getting one.

The pelican cases are exceptionally tough, and the 1200 is a very good fit for the empeg. One thing to bear in mind, though, is that the ends of the screws that connect the handle to the case protrude into the inside of the thing a little, around 3-4mm. I would suggest that it would be a good idea to cut the foam so that the faceplate of the empeg was towards the back of the case rather than the front, or in an impact is might be possible for the screws to make contact with the faceplate and scratch it. That said, my brother has one, and so far after a few knocks nothing bad has happened.

For toughness, I haven't seen much that will beat the things. My sister's boyfriend is a professional caver, and keeps all his gear in various sizes of pelican case. You should see some of them! Scraped to hell after being dropped 80 feet down a 45-degree slope under the mendips, for instance, without a mark on the camera inside.

the 1200 seems just a little too small. there really wasn't enough room IMO to take a good jolt. if it was just a little bigger, it would be perfect.

I did have a 1200 case, and dropped it about 20 feet, with one of my empegs inside. While the case broke, the empeg didn't even get as much as a scratch.
It is really a good fit for the empeg and a remote, but nothing else will fit in there. That's the only reason I replaced it with a 1400 case.

Then there must be (at least) 2 versions of the Pelican 1200... On my 1200 the handle attaches to extensions molded into (onto?) the case. The only thing sharp inside the case is the pressure release valve which protrudes about 1.5-2mm into the case. On the inside, behind where the handle attaches there are small ridges which look to be about as high as the pressure valve - those and the foam should protect anything non-convex from ever touching the valve.

I'll see if I can get some photos of that later this week.

Well, I had it sitting on my window sill (the inside portion of course) and a co-worker decided to close that very window. And doing that, he accidentally pushed my empeg inside the case to the outside, where it fell down onto the concrete surface of the car park.
Not very dramatic, but my co-worker was relieved to find out that my expensive empeg wasn't damaged at all. On the other had, he was absolutely shocked to find out how expensive the pelican case was.
